== Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Belgium? 2025 Update ==

No, with one exception. Belgian motorways are completely free for passenger cars, motorcycles, and vehicles under 3.5 t GVW. The Viapass distance-based toll system applies only to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. The sole toll facility where cars pay is the Liefkenshoek Tunnel under the Scheldt near Antwerp.

Belgium operates a '''dual toll system''' depending on vehicle type:

Key Reality: Belgium has one of the densest motorway networks in Europe for its size, and for private cars it remains fully free. HGV operators, however, face a comprehensive distance-based toll covering motorways and many major roads across all three regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital).

'''Cars and Light Vehicles (≤3.5 tonnes):'''

2026 Update: Viapass HGV rates were indexed to inflation in January 2026. The Belgian federal and regional governments continue to discuss a potential road pricing scheme for private cars (kilometre charge), but no car toll has been enacted. Belgium remains car-toll-free in 2026.

* '''FREE''' on all highways and motorways
* '''Liefkenshoek Tunnel only:''' €6.10 per passage (near Antwerp)

'''Heavy Vehicles (>3.5 tonnes):'''

Belgium Toll Costs: Current Rates

* '''Mandatory OBU''' (On-Board Unit) required
* '''Distance-based tolls''' via Viapass system
* Covers trucks, buses, heavy motorhomes
* Semi-trailer tractors N1 category with body code BC (regardless of weight)

== Belgium Toll System: Viapass ==

Viapass HGV Rates (3.5<12 T) (per km, 2026)

The Viapass system replaced the Eurovignette on April 1, 2016, introducing satellite-based distance charging.

As of July 1st, 2026, Viapass introduced a major structural change in Flanders: a CO₂ emissions class surcharge. Vehicles must now register their CO₂ emission class (from 1 to 5) in their OBU, which directly impacts the per-kilometer rate. Rates shown are for a 2-axle HGV on motorway:

Belgium imposes '''heavy fines''' for toll violations:

January 2026 indexation: Viapass per-km rates were increased by approximately 2.8% in line with the Belgian health index, affecting all HGV categories

* Driving without functioning OBU

Car road pricing debate: The Belgian federal government's De Wever coalition included kilometre-based car road pricing in its formation agreement; legislation is under preparation but not yet in force. Belgium remains car-toll-free for motorway use in 2026

* Tampering with or covering OBU

Antwerp Oosterweel Link: The major Antwerp ring road project (Oosterweel) continued construction through 2025; new tunnel sections are expected to be added to the Viapass network as they open

* Using incorrect vehicle classification

Zero-emission incentive: Battery-electric and hydrogen HGVs registered in Belgium benefit from reduced Viapass rates in line with EU Eurovignette directive

* Specific penalty amounts vary by violation severity

Car drivers: no preparation needed; Belgian motorways are free; only the Liefkenshoek Tunnel costs €8 if you choose to use it (the alternative Kennedy Tunnel is free but more congested)

HGV operators: obtain a Viapass-compatible OBU before entering Belgium; Satellic has service points at major Belgian border crossings

Brussels Ring (R0) and Antwerp Ring (R1) are included in the Viapass network — HGV operators transiting the country cannot avoid toll roads on most practical routes

The E40 (Calais–Brussels–Liège–Aachen), E17 (Antwerp – Ghent – Kortrijk), and E19 (Paris–Brussels–Antwerp) are the main international transit corridors, all covered by Viapass

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

=== Do I need to pay tolls for driving through Belgium with a car? ===
No, Belgian highways are completely free for cars and light vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. Only the Liefkenshoek Tunnel near Antwerp charges €6.10.

=== Can I drive a truck in Belgium without an OBU? ===
No, all heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must have a functioning OBU showing a green light at all times. Violations result in heavy fines.

=== Which countries' OBUs work in Belgium? ===
Belgium uses the Viapass system, which is separate from other European toll systems. You need a Belgium-specific OBU from one of the seven accredited providers.

=== How long can I keep an OBU if I'm not returning to Belgium? ===
If you don't plan to return within three weeks, you should return the OBU to get your €135 deposit refunded. Extended rentals may incur additional charges.

=== Are there toll-free alternatives to Belgian highways? ===
Yes, national and regional roads remain toll-free, but they're slower and less efficient for long-distance travel.

=== Do emission standards really affect toll costs? ===
Yes, significantly. EURO VI vehicles pay much less than EURO 0-III vehicles. The difference can be substantial over long distances.

=== Can I pay Belgian tolls with foreign fleet cards? ===
Most accredited OBU providers accept various international fleet cards and payment methods. Check with your preferred provider for specific options.

== Common Mistakes to Avoid ==

* '''Assuming Eurovignette still works''' - Belgium left the Eurovignette system in 2016
* '''Forgetting OBU for semi-trailers under 3.5t''' - N1/BC category vehicles need OBUs regardless of weight
* '''Not checking OBU green light''' - Device must show green continuously while driving
* '''Wrong emission class declaration''' - Ensure accurate EURO standard registration for correct rates
* '''Ignoring Liefkenshoek Tunnel toll''' - The only toll for cars in Belgium
* '''Delayed OBU return''' - Return devices promptly to avoid additional charges

== Technical Requirements ==

=== OBU Installation ===
* '''Windscreen mounting:''' Specific position requirements
* '''Clear satellite view:''' No obstructions above device
* '''Secure attachment:''' Tamper-evident installation
* '''Visibility:''' Green light must be clearly visible to enforcement

=== System Integration ===
* '''EETS compatibility:''' European Electronic Toll Service member
* '''Cross-border recognition:''' Some providers offer multi-country solutions
* '''Real-time tracking:''' GNSS-based precise location monitoring
* '''Automatic invoicing:''' Distance and rate calculation without driver intervention

Belgium Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: Distance-based HGV toll (Viapass / Be-PASS) for vehicles over 3.5 t on motorways and major roads; one point toll tunnel for all vehicles
Operator: Viapass (interregional cooperation); Liefkenshoek Tunnel operated by Flemish government
Currency: Euro (EUR)
Coverage: All motorways (autosnelwegen / autoroutes) and most major roads for HGVs; cars drive motorways free
Technology: GNSS on-board unit (OBU); DSRC microwave gantries; no OBU required for cars

Do Cars Pay Toll in Belgium? 2026 Update

Key Reality: Belgium has one of the densest motorway networks in Europe for its size, and for private cars it remains fully free. HGV operators, however, face a comprehensive distance-based toll covering motorways and many major roads across all three regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital).

2026 Update: Viapass HGV rates were indexed to inflation in January 2026. The Belgian federal and regional governments continue to discuss a potential road pricing scheme for private cars (kilometre charge), but no car toll has been enacted. Belgium remains car-toll-free in 2026.

Belgium Toll Costs: Current Rates

Viapass HGV Rates (3.5<12 T) (per km, 2026)

As of July 1st, 2026, Viapass introduced a major structural change in Flanders: a CO₂ emissions class surcharge. Vehicles must now register their CO₂ emission class (from 1 to 5) in their OBU, which directly impacts the per-kilometer rate. Rates shown are for a 2-axle HGV on motorway:

Euro Class Wallonia (ex-VAT) Flanders
ZEV 0.061 0.009
Euro V 0.077 0.114
Euro IV 0.092 0.130
Euro III and below 0.123 0.172

Lighter vehicles (3.5–12 t) pay lower per-km rates. Verify current tariffs at Viapass.

Liefkenshoek Tunnel — Point Toll (All Vehicles, 2026)

Vehicle Type Standard Rate (€) Notes
Passenger car / motorcycle 8.00 Card and cash accepted
Van / minibus (over 3.5 t) 4.40 Viapass OBU also accepted
HGV (2 axles) 8.00 Card and cash accepted
HGV (3+ axles) 8.00 Card and cash accepted

Liefkenshoek Tunnel is located northwest of Antwerp and provides an alternative to the Kennedy Tunnel and Antwerp Ring. Verify current rates at Liefkenshoektunnel.

How to Pay Belgium Tolls

HGV Viapass OBU:

 • GNSS OBU required before entering the Belgian tolled road network; no retroactive booking permitted
 • OBU available from certified service providers: Axxès, Satellic, Telepass, Toll4Europe, TotalEnergies Marketing Services et W.A.G. Payment Solutions
 • Satellic remains the national distribution provider with rental/return service points
 • EETS OBUs from other European providers registered for Belgium are accepted

Liefkenshoek Tunnel (cars and HGVs):

 • Cash (EUR) and all major credit/debit cards at staffed booths and automated lanes
 • Viapass OBU handles tunnel payment automatically for HGVs

To calculate toll costs for trucks and vans transiting Belgium, use the TollGuru Belgium toll calculator:

Enforcement and Penalties

 • Roadside control units and enforcement cameras check OBU registration and account status automatically
 • Driving without a valid OBU or with an inactive account: fine up to €1,000 plus unpaid toll retroactively applied
 • Vehicle may be immobilised until fine and toll debt are settled
 • Foreign-registered HGVs are subject to identical enforcement; EU cross-border fine recovery applies
 • Incorrect vehicle classification (axle count, emission class) triggers underpayment charges plus administrative penalty

Recent Changes (2026)

 • January 2026 indexation: Viapass per-km rates were increased by approximately 2.8% in line with the Belgian health index, affecting all HGV categories
 • Car road pricing debate: The Belgian federal government's De Wever coalition included kilometre-based car road pricing in its formation agreement; legislation is under preparation but not yet in force. Belgium remains car-toll-free for motorway use in 2026
 • Antwerp Oosterweel Link: The major Antwerp ring road project (Oosterweel) continued construction through 2025; new tunnel sections are expected to be added to the Viapass network as they open
 • Zero-emission incentive: Battery-electric and hydrogen HGVs registered in Belgium benefit from reduced Viapass rates in line with EU Eurovignette directive

Planning Your Journey

 • Car drivers: no preparation needed; Belgian motorways are free; only the Liefkenshoek Tunnel costs €8 if you choose to use it (the alternative Kennedy Tunnel is free but more congested)
 • HGV operators: obtain a Viapass-compatible OBU before entering Belgium; Satellic has service points at major Belgian border crossings
 • Brussels Ring (R0) and Antwerp Ring (R1) are included in the Viapass network — HGV operators transiting the country cannot avoid toll roads on most practical routes
 • The E40 (Calais–Brussels–Liège–Aachen), E17 (Antwerp – Ghent – Kortrijk), and E19 (Paris–Brussels–Antwerp) are the main international transit corridors, all covered by Viapass

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cars need an OBU in Belgium?

No. The OBU requirement applies only to vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Passenger cars, motorcycles, and light vans drive all Belgian motorways and roads completely free without any device or registration.

What is Satellic?

Satellic is the official Belgian OBU provider contracted by Viapass. It provides GNSS/DSRC on-board units for HGVs, available for purchase or rental. Foreign operators with EETS-registered OBUs from other providers (DKV, UTA, etc.) can use those instead if they cover the Belgian network.

Does the Viapass toll apply to vans and light trucks?

Yes — from 1 April 2016, the Viapass toll has applied to all vehicles over 3.5 t GVW, including light commercial vehicles and larger vans. Vehicles at or under 3.5 t remain toll-free.
