Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Denmark? 2026 Update

If you cross one of Denmark's two major fixed links. The vast majority of Danish roads — including all Danish motorways on the mainland — are completely toll-free. Tolls apply exclusively at the Oresund Bridge (connecting Copenhagen to Malmö, Sweden) and the Great Belt Bridge / Storebaelt (connecting the islands of Fyn and Zealand).

Key Reality: If you are driving only within Jutland (the mainland peninsula) or only on the island of Zealand without using the Oresund or Great Belt crossings, you will pay zero tolls. Most domestic Danish journeys involve at least one of these crossings, making familiarity with the tolls important for everyday travel.

2026 Update: Both the Oresund Bridge and Great Belt Bridge adjusted their tariffs from 1 January 2026, with rate increases in line with the Danish consumer price index. BroBizz discount rates also updated accordingly. Copenhagen has no urban congestion charge; the proposed København congestion scheme remains in political discussion with no confirmed implementation date. Following its exit from the Eurovignette treaty, Denmark operates a mature, national kilometre-based truck toll (Kilometerafgift) managed via the official Vejafgifter. Commercial trucks weighing 12 tonnes or more must pay a digital, distance-based toll covering over 10,900 km of the Danish state and municipal road networks. This toll is calculated via GPS On-Board Units (OBU) or digital tickets based on precise mileage, vehicle weight, and CO₂ emission classes

You are not entitled to the express price if you pay by credit card or cash. You also will not receive the express price if your Bizz or license plate agreement is not active at the time of the trip

How to Pay Denmark Tolls

• Both crossings use barrier gates; vehicles must pay before the barrier raises
• CCTV records all vehicles; non-payment results in a fine notice issued to the registered owner

• Copenhagen congestion charge (still in discussion): The proposed congestion charge for the Greater Copenhagen area remained under political negotiation in 2025 and is not yet in effect; the Danish parliament has not passed enabling legislation as of 2026
