<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No - but you'll pay a 22% premium without it on domestic routes. Uruguay converted to a fully automated, cashless toll system in May 2024. All domestic toll plazas now operate with automatic barriers via TAG (Telepeaje) or SUCIVE license plate recognition. No cash is accepted at domestic toll plazas. This is different from the two international bridges to Argentina (see below), which are administered separately by CARU and still use manned cash/card booths.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> Telepeaje TAG provides a consistent 22% discount over SUCIVE rates domestically. For a Category 1 car, that is UYU 150.01 with TAG versus UYU 192.37 via SUCIVE - a saving of UYU 42.36 per plaza. Foreign visitors can use the Tourist Pass system and pay via ABITAB or RedPagos after travel, avoiding the SUCIVE billing process. If you're crossing into Argentina via the CARU bridges, this domestic system does not apply at all - see the dedicated section below.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2026 Update:</strong> Domestic rates are updated on a semi-annual schedule (June 1 and December 1), tracking inflation. Separately, CARU adjusted the international bridge tolls effective December 29, 2025 (per Memo de Contaduria N.076/25), tracking exchange-rate movements between the Argentine and Uruguayan pesos rather than inflation - the USD-denominated base value typically stays fixed while the peso amounts in both currencies are periodically re-set. The Tourist Pass system has been enhanced with improved mobile app functionality for foreign visitors on domestic routes.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No, you don't need Telepeaje to use Uruguay's toll roads - but you'll pay significantly more without it. <p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">The Comision Administradora del Rio Uruguay (CARU), a binational Uruguay-Argentina authority, independently administers two toll bridges across the Uruguay River. These are NOT part of the domestic Telepeaje/SUCIVE network and use a completely different pricing mechanism - rates are set in US dollars, then billed in both Uruguayan pesos and Argentine pesos at the prevailing exchange rate, adjusted periodically (most recently effective December 29, 2025, per CARU's Memo de Contaduria N.076/25) rather than on a fixed semi-annual inflation schedule.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Uruguay operates a unified toll system across all major routes, with rates updated every six months (June 1 and December 1). <p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No - domestic toll rates are the same for all vehicles regardless of nationality. <p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">SUCIVE provides 60 days to pay. Uruguay Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: Domestic - Electronic toll collection (Telepeaje TAG) + SUCIVE license plate recognition, fully automated since May 2024. Separately, two international bridges to Argentina use a distinct USD-pegged system administered by CARU
Coverage: Nationwide domestic routes - Ruta 1, 3, 5, 8, 9 and Interbalnearia; plus 2 international river bridges to Argentina (Puente General Artigas and Puente Libertador General San Martin)
Currency: Uruguayan Peso (UYU) domestically; the international bridges are priced in USD and settled in both UYU and Argentine Pesos (ARS)
Technology: RFID TAG transponders; automatic license plate recognition (ANPR) domestically; manual toll booths at the international bridges
Operators: Corporacion Vial del Uruguay (CVU) and the Ministry of Transport and Public Works for domestic routes; Comision Administradora del Rio Uruguay (CARU) - a binational Uruguay-Argentina authority - for the two international bridges

Do I Need Telepeaje for Uruguay? 2026 Update

No - but you'll pay a 22% premium without it on domestic routes. Uruguay converted to a fully automated, cashless toll system in May 2024. All domestic toll plazas now operate with automatic barriers via TAG (Telepeaje) or SUCIVE license plate recognition. No cash is accepted at domestic toll plazas. This is different from the two international bridges to Argentina (see below), which are administered separately by CARU and still use manned cash/card booths.

Key Reality: Telepeaje TAG provides a consistent 22% discount over SUCIVE rates domestically. If you're crossing into Argentina via the CARU bridges, this domestic system does not apply at all - see the dedicated section below.

2026 Update: Domestic rates are updated on a semi-annual schedule (June 1 and December 1), tracking inflation. The Tourist Pass system has been enhanced with improved mobile app functionality for foreign visitors on domestic routes.

Uruguay Toll Costs: Current Rates (2026)

Domestic Rates by Vehicle Category

Category Description Telepeaje (TAG) SUCIVE (Plate) Saving
Cat 1 Cars, pickup trucks, 2-axle vehicles UYU 150.01 UYU 192.37 22% (UYU 42.36)
Cat 2 Tractors without semi-trailer; buses up to 25 passengers UYU 209.32 UYU 268.42 22% (UYU 59.10)
Cat 3 3-axle trucks; large buses UYU 332.87 UYU 426.83 22% (UYU 93.96)
Cat 4 4+ axle cargo vehicles UYU 427.37 UYU 548.03 22% (UYU 120.66)
Cat 5 Road trains; articulated vehicles UYU 709.43 UYU 917.12 23% (UYU 207.69)

Rates shown are per toll plaza. Major intercity journeys cross multiple plazas. Rates are adjusted every six months (June 1 and December 1); check the CVU website for the latest rates.

International Bridges to Argentina (CARU) - Separate System

The Comision Administradora del Rio Uruguay (CARU), a binational Uruguay-Argentina authority, independently administers two toll bridges across the Uruguay River. These are NOT part of the domestic Telepeaje/SUCIVE network and use a completely different pricing mechanism - rates are set in US dollars, then billed in both Uruguayan pesos and Argentine pesos at the prevailing exchange rate, adjusted periodically (most recently effective December 29, 2025, per CARU's Memo de Contaduria N.076/25) rather than on a fixed semi-annual inflation schedule.

Bridge Connects Opened
Puente General Artigas Paysandu (Uruguay) - Colon (Argentina) 1975
Puente Libertador General San Martin Fray Bentos (Uruguay) - Gualeguaychu/Puerto Unzue (Argentina) 1976

Most recent confirmed rate snapshot (mid-2025, prior to the December 29, 2025 adjustment):

Vehicle Type USD ARS UYU
Motorcycles $2 2,600 100
Cars/pickups (with or without trailer) $8 10,000 400
Trucks, buses, RVs $33 42,500 1,650
Buses (4+ axles) $55 70,000 2,500
Cargo transport (4+ axles) $85 113,000 4,000

Note: CARU applied a further peso adjustment effective December 29, 2025 (Memo de Contaduria N.076/25), tracking exchange-rate movements. The source document for that specific update is a scanned PDF with no extractable text, so the exact post-adjustment peso figures could not be independently confirmed in this review - verify current pricing directly at caru.org.uy before travel. The USD-denominated values typically remain stable across these periodic peso re-adjustments.

Neighbouring resident discount ("Usuario Vecinal"): Anyone who can prove residence within 50 km of either bridge (including the Argentine town of Ubajay, Entre Rios) qualifies for a discounted rate - historically around 50-60% off the standard fare. Registration is done online at caru.org.uy.

Indicative Journey Costs (2026 estimates, Cat 1 vehicle, domestic routes)

How to Pay Uruguay Tolls

1. Telepeaje TAG - Domestic (Recommended - 22% savings):

  • RFID windshield transponder; linked to credit card or prepaid balance
  • Available at toll plazas, RedPagos locations, banks, and online via CVU website
  • 22% discount on all toll passages; automatic deduction on passage

2. SUCIVE License Plate Recognition - Domestic:

  • Automatic capture of all vehicles without TAG; 60-day payment deadline after plaza passage
  • 22% higher rates than Telepeaje; pay at ABITAB, RedPagos, or online
  • Unpaid SUCIVE bills attract escalating fines after 60 days: 15x the toll rate for first violation, 30x for repeat offences

3. Tourist Pass - Domestic (for foreign visitors):

  • Register online or via mobile app with foreign licence plate; no TAG required
  • Pay after travel at ABITAB/RedPagos (cash) or at toll plazas with international credit card
  • 24-hour activation period; designed specifically for tourists and short-term visitors

4. CARU International Bridges (separate cash/card system):

  • Manned toll booths accept cash (UYU or ARS) and card at both Puente Artigas and Puente San Martin
  • Telepeaje TAG and SUCIVE do NOT work at these bridges - completely separate system
  • Neighbouring residents (within 50 km) can register online at caru.org.uy for the discounted Usuario Vecinal rate

5. Cash (domestic routes): No longer accepted at any domestic Uruguayan toll plaza since May 2024. Tourists on domestic routes must use the Tourist Pass or international card options. This does not apply at the CARU international bridges, which remain cash/card.

Major Toll Routes (2026)

  • Ruta 1 - Montevideo to Colonia del Sacramento; popular for ferry connections to Buenos Aires
  • Ruta 3 - Montevideo north to Salto and the Salto Grande dam (Argentina border)
  • Ruta 5 - Montevideo north to Rivera (Brazil border)
  • Ruta 8 - Montevideo east to Treinta y Tres
  • Ruta 9 - Montevideo east to Chuy (Brazil border); coastal route
  • Interbalnearia - Coastal highway from Montevideo east to Punta del Este and Rocha; heavily used in summer tourist season
  • Puente General Artigas - Paysandu to Colon, Argentina (CARU-administered, separate system)
  • Puente Libertador General San Martin - Fray Bentos to Gualeguaychu, Argentina (CARU-administered, separate system)

Recent Changes (2026)

  • Full cashless conversion, domestic (May 2024): All domestic toll plazas transitioned to automatic barriers; cash payments eliminated nationwide on Telepeaje/SUCIVE routes; all barriers operate via TAG or ANPR
  • Semi-annual rate adjustments, domestic: Rates adjust June 1 and December 1 each year, tracking inflation
  • CARU international bridge adjustment (December 29, 2025): A new peso-value adjustment took effect on both bridges per Memo de Contaduria N.076/25, tracking exchange-rate movement between the Uruguayan and Argentine pesos; the underlying USD-denominated value typically remains fixed through these adjustments
  • Tourist Pass enhancement, domestic: Improved mobile app with real-time balance and journey tracking; easier online registration for foreign plates
  • CVU system improvements, domestic: Faster ANPR processing; improved accuracy across all 100+ toll plazas nationwide

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I avoid Uruguay tolls?

All major highways in Uruguay are toll roads. Secondary roads exist as alternatives but add significant travel time and may be in poor condition, particularly after rain. Budget for tolls on any intercity journey, and separately for the CARU bridge toll if crossing into Argentina.

Do foreign tourists pay different rates?

No - domestic toll rates are the same for all vehicles regardless of nationality. Foreign visitors have the Tourist Pass system as a convenient payment option. On the CARU international bridges, standard visitors pay the listed rate, while only proven local residents within 50 km qualify for the discounted Usuario Vecinal rate.

What happens if I don't pay SUCIVE bills?

SUCIVE provides 60 days to pay. After that, fines escalate to 15x the toll rate for first violations and 30x for repeat offences, plus potential legal action. Foreign vehicles can also be pursued via bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries. This penalty system applies to domestic routes only - the CARU international bridges require payment at the booth at the time of crossing, since there is no plate-billing mechanism there.

Are the CARU bridges part of the Telepeaje network?

No. The Comision Administradora del Rio Uruguay (CARU) is a completely separate, binational Uruguay-Argentina authority. Telepeaje TAG and SUCIVE do not work at Puente General Artigas or Puente Libertador General San Martin - you must pay cash or card directly at the booth.

Uruguay vs. Neighbouring Countries (2026)

Country System Typical Cost (Cat 1 car) Notes
Uruguay Telepeaje + SUCIVE (domestic, cashless since May 2024); CARU cash/card (international bridges) UYU 150 per plaza (TAG, domestic); US$8/10,000 ARS/400 UYU per crossing (Argentina bridges) Tourist Pass available for foreign vehicles domestically
Argentina TELEPASE + cash; extensive concession network ARS 500-2,000+ per plaza High inflation affects rates frequently
Brazil Sem Parar / electronic + cash; extensive concession system BRL 3-25+ per plaza Largest toll road network in South America
Paraguay Limited toll roads; cash predominant Low rates in PYG Developing electronic systems
