<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes - FASTag is mandatory for all Class M and N vehicles on national highways in Assam, as it is across India since February 15, 2021. Vehicles entering a FASTag lane without a valid, active tag are charged double the standard toll rate. Most Assam plazas also maintain hybrid cash lanes, but using a FASTag lane without a tag incurs the 2x penalty.</p>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes - FASTag is mandatory for all Class M and N vehicles on national highways in Assam, as it is across India. Since November 15, 2025, a vehicle entering a fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag pays 2x the applicable fee in cash, or 1.25x if it pays through UPI. Most Assam plazas also maintain hybrid lanes for these payments.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> Assam is a major transit corridor for Northeast India. Vehicles traveling from Guwahati toward Nagaon, Tezpur, Jorhat, or Dibrugarh pass through multiple NHAI plazas in succession. Without FASTag, each plaza stop costs twice the standard rate and adds queue time. Two-wheelers are generally exempt from toll charges at NHAI-operated national highway plazas.</p>

Assam Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: FASTag electronic toll collection (mandatory) + UPI and cash payment at hybrid lanes (higher rates apply)
Coverage: National Highways NH-27 (old NH-31, NH-37), NH-715, NH-54 and NH-15 across Assam; 13 NHAI fee plazas, 7 revised April 2026
Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
Technology: FASTag RFID transponders, ANPR cameras, e-notice recovery system; GNSS and barrier-free (MLFF) tolling in national pilot
Operators: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) through appointed fee collection agencies

Do I Need FASTag for Assam? 2026 Update

Yes - FASTag is mandatory for all Class M and N vehicles on national highways in Assam, as it is across India. Since November 15, 2025, a vehicle entering a fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag pays 2x the applicable fee in cash, or 1.25x if it pays through UPI. Most Assam plazas also maintain hybrid lanes for these payments.

Key Reality: Assam is a major transit corridor for Northeast India. Vehicles traveling from Guwahati toward Nagaon, Tezpur, Jorhat, or Dibrugarh pass through multiple NHAI plazas in succession. Without FASTag, each plaza stop costs 1.25x (UPI) or 2x (cash) the standard rate and adds queue time. Two-wheelers are generally exempt from toll charges at NHAI-operated national highway plazas.

2026 Update: NHAI revised toll rates at seven Assam plazas effective April 1, 2026, with increases of Rs 5-30 per vehicle class. The FASTag Annual Pass for non-commercial vehicles was simultaneously revised to Rs 3,075 for FY 2026-27, covering 200 crossings or one year at about 1,150 NHAI plazas nationwide. The local monthly pass for non-commercial vehicles within a 20 km radius of the seven revised Assam plazas is fixed at Rs 360 for FY 2026-27.

Assam Toll Costs: Current Rates

Assam operates NHAI-managed national highway plazas. Rates are revised annually on April 1 under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, indexed to the Wholesale Price Index (WPI). The April 2026 revision applied increases of Rs 5-30 per vehicle class across the seven affected plazas. Ranges below apply the April 2026 revision to FY 2025-26 base rates; the exact amount is plaza-specific and shown on each plaza's fee notice.

Plaza-Specific Rates (April 2026)

Toll Plaza Highway / District Car/Jeep/Van LCV/Mini-Bus Bus/2-Axle Truck
Nazirakhat (Sonapur) NH-27 (old NH-37), Kamrup Metropolitan Rs 150 Rs 245 Rs 510
Raha (Saragaon) NH-27 (old NH-37), Nagaon Rs 130 Rs 210 Rs 435
Madanpur (Baihata Chariali) NH-27 (old NH-31), Kamrup Rs 145 Rs 235 Rs 490
Mikirbati-Haogaon (Mikirati Hawgaon) NH-27, Hojai (Lanka-Hatikhali stretch) Rs 105 Rs 165 Rs 350

Rates reflect the April 1, 2026 WPI-indexed revision over FY 2025-26 rates. Nazirakhat, Raha, Madanpur and Mikirbati-Haogaon show the single-journey fee in NHAI fee-plaza data. Sulung, Rangamati and Ratowa show ranges that apply the Rs 5-30 revision to their FY 2025-26 notified rates. Confirm the exact amount for your vehicle class on Rajmargyatra or the plaza fee notice. Without FASTag: 2x the applicable rate in cash or 1.25x via UPI at every plaza. Use the TollGuru calculator for exact route totals.

How to Pay Assam Tolls

The following payment methods are available at Assam toll plazas:

1. FASTag (Recommended)

  • RFID sticker affixed to windscreen; automatically deducted at the boom barrier
  • Available from authorised issuing banks, NHAI retail points, and online via issuing bank apps
  • Tag fees, security deposit and minimum recharge vary by issuing bank; check with the issuer before purchase
  • Works at all NHAI plazas nationwide including all seven revised Assam plazas
  • Eligible non-commercial vehicles can add the FASTag Annual Pass (Rs 3,075 for FY 2026-27) through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website; it activates on the linked FASTag within about two hours
  • Keep a balance above the estimated trip cost to avoid a failed transaction mid-route

2. NHAI Apps

  • Rajmargyatra (official NHAI app): Annual Pass purchase, toll plaza information, plaza complaint submission
  • My FASTag app: wallet recharge, tag status check
  • NHAI helpline: 1033 (24x7, toll-free) for emergencies, plaza complaints, and FASTag issues

3. Cash and UPI (Non-FASTag Vehicles)

  • Accepted at designated hybrid lanes; vehicles without a working FASTag must not use FASTag-only lanes
  • Cash payment without a valid FASTag is charged 2x the applicable fee
  • UPI payment is charged 1.25x the applicable fee, and a receipt showing date, time, amount and vehicle class is issued
  • If a valid FASTag with sufficient balance is not processed because of plaza equipment failure, the vehicle passes without payment and a zero-transaction receipt is issued

4. GNSS-Based Tolling (Pilot Phase)

  • GNSS satellite tolling is in national pilot phase; FASTag remains the primary payment system at Assam plazas
  • Barrier-less Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling has a notified unpaid-fee recovery framework from March 17, 2026; the first barrier-free plaza is planned in Gujarat and none has been announced for Assam

Enforcement and Penalties

NHAI enforces toll compliance at Assam plazas through RFID readers, ANPR cameras, and a national e-notice system active from March 17, 2026.

Key Penalty Rules:

  • Non-FASTag payment: 2x the applicable fee in cash, or 1.25x via UPI, charged at the plaza
  • FASTag blacklisting: Triggered by insufficient balance, expired KYC, or vehicle registration mismatch. Resolve the tag status with the issuing bank before the next plaza
  • Tag misuse: Using one FASTag for multiple vehicles, or holding the tag by hand at the reader rather than affixing it to the windscreen, results in tag deactivation
  • E-notice system (from March 17, 2026): Unpaid tolls recorded by RFID or ANPR trigger an e-notice by SMS, email or app. Paying within 72 hours of the notice settles only the original toll; otherwise 2x is payable. Owners can submit a representation on the designated portal within 72 hours. Dues unpaid beyond 15 days with no pending representation are recorded in VAHAN, and vehicle-related services, including NOC for ownership transfer, may be restricted
  • 100-metre / 10-second rule: If a queue at a plaza exceeds 100 metres or per-vehicle service time exceeds 10 seconds, vehicles may pass toll-free until congestion clears (plaza discretion)

Exempt Vehicles:

  • Agricultural tractors carrying farm produce (specifically confirmed in the April 2026 Assam revision)
  • Presidential, Governor and Vice-Presidential convoys
  • Armed Forces, paramilitary, and fire service vehicles on duty
  • Ambulances and medical emergency vehicles
  • Gallantry award recipients (Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra and similar) with certified photo ID
  • Two-wheelers at NHAI-operated national highway plazas

Recent Changes (2026)

  • Increases of Rs 5-30 per vehicle class, varying by plaza
  • Local monthly pass for non-commercial vehicles within a 20 km radius fixed at Rs 360 for FY 2026-27
  • Agricultural tractors carrying farm produce confirmed exempt from all revised plaza fees

April 1, 2026 - National FASTag Annual Pass Revision:

  • FASTag Annual Pass fee revised from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075 for FY 2026-27
  • Pass valid for non-commercial vehicles for 200 crossings or one year, whichever comes first, at about 1,150 NHAI plazas nationwide

March 17, 2026 - E-Notice Enforcement System:

  • NHAI launched a nationwide e-notice system issuing SMS/email notices for unpaid toll violations
  • 72-hour window to pay the original toll or file a representation; dues unpaid beyond 15 days are recorded in VAHAN and may restrict vehicle-related services

November 15, 2025 - Non-FASTag Payment Rule:

  • Vehicles entering a fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag pay 2x the applicable fee in cash
  • The same vehicles pay 1.25x the applicable fee if they pay through UPI

New Plazas (2026 Status):

  • Sulung (Chulung) Toll Plaza on NH-715 (Kaliabor Tiniali-Dolabari stretch, Nagaon district) is now operational, adding a third fee point between Guwahati and Tezpur alongside Sonapur (Nazirakhat) and Raha
  • Ratowa Fee Plaza on NH-15 near Jinjia, Biswanath district is now operational, covering the Dolabari-Jamuguri-Gohpur stretch on the north bank of the Brahmaputra
  • Rangamati Fee Plaza on NH-715 (old NH-37) near Dergaon, Golaghat district is now operational on the Numaligarh-Jorhat stretch
  • GNSS satellite tolling remains in national pilot; the barrier-less MLFF unpaid-fee recovery framework was notified on March 17, 2026

Planning Your Journey

Practical Tips:

  • The Guwahati-Nagaon NH-27 (old NH-37) corridor now has multiple consecutive plazas - recharge FASTag adequately before departure from Guwahati rather than relying on mobile top-up between plazas
  • Vehicles traveling Guwahati to Tezpur should budget for at least three plaza crossings each way (Sonapur, Raha, Sulung)
  • The Ratowa plaza on NH-15 charges noticeably more than the NH-27 (old NH-37) plazas (car Rs 205-230 vs Rs 105-150); factor this in for north-bank Brahmaputra routes
  • Frequent travellers with a non-commercial vehicle can compare the FASTag Annual Pass (Rs 3,075 for 200 crossings) against per-trip tolls before buying
  • Monsoon season (June-September) brings flooding and road closures on several NH stretches in Assam; check NHAI and BRO advisories for diversions before travel
  • The return journey within 24 hours costs 1.5x the single-trip rate, not 2x - same-day round trips save money versus two separate single-trip charges
  • If you travel the NH-27 (old NH-37) corridor daily, the local monthly pass at Rs 360 per plaza is the most economical option for non-commercial vehicles within 20 km of a plaza

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I avoid toll plazas in Assam?

Yes, by using state highways and district roads that run parallel to national highways. However, these are generally narrower, slower (expect 30-90 minutes extra on most corridors), and less well maintained. The national highways offer significantly better road quality and connectivity.

Do motorcycles pay tolls in Assam?

Two-wheelers are generally exempt from toll charges at NHAI-operated national highway plazas in Assam. However, exemptions can vary by specific road and concessionaire; verify before traveling on a specific stretch.

What happens if my FASTag balance runs out mid-route?

A tag with insufficient balance fails at the plaza, and you pay 2x in cash or 1.25x via UPI. Recharge through your issuing bank's app or the My FASTag app before the next plaza; the NHAI helpline 1033 can help with FASTag issues.

Why are there now more toll plazas between Guwahati and Tezpur?

NHAI commissioned the Sulung (Chulung) Toll Plaza on the Kaliabor-Tezpur stretch of NH-715 (old NH-37). Previously vehicles paid at Sonapur (Nazirakhat) and Raha; the Sulung plaza adds a third fee point on this corridor. Vehicles from Guwahati to Tezpur pay at three points: Sonapur, Raha and Sulung. Travelling onward to Gohpur on the north bank adds the Ratowa plaza near Jinjia.

Is toll collection mandatory even if the road is in poor condition?

Toll remains payable at notified plazas, but NHAI is expected to maintain defined service levels on tolled sections. Road quality issues can be reported via the NHAI helpline at 1033 or the Rajmargyatra app. Separately, if queue length exceeds 100 metres or per-vehicle service time exceeds 10 seconds, vehicles may pass without payment until the situation normalises.

Are toll rates the same on all Assam national highways?

No. Each plaza has gazette-notified rates based on factors such as its tollable length, road category and project cost. This is why Ratowa on NH-15 charges noticeably more per trip than the NH-27 (old NH-37) plazas.
