== Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Poland? 2025 Update ==

It depends on your vehicle's total weight. Passenger cars and motorcycles of 3.5 tonnes or less drive 100% toll-free on all state-managed motorways managed by GDDKiA (A1 south of Toruń, A2 Konin–Stryków and A4 Wrocław–Gliwice). Light vehicles do not require e-TOLL registration or e-paper tickets on state roads.

Poland uses a '''mixed toll system''' with significant changes since 2023. Whether you pay tolls depends on your vehicle weight and route:

Heavy Vehicles (> 3.5 t) and Buses: e-TOLL is strictly mandatory for all trucks, commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, and buses (9+ seats regardless of weight) using designated state motorways, expressways, and national roads. Failure to register or pay electronic tolls results in administrative penalties from PLN 250 to PLN 1,500. Agricultural tractors are not covered by e-TOLL.

'''Toll Roads for Light Vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes):'''

Concession Sections: Private motorway sections (A1 Gdańsk–Toruń, A2 Świecko–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków) operate under independent concession tariffs. Passenger cars pay at toll plazas via cash, card, or automatic ANPR Videotoll apps (e.g. AmberGO on A1, Autopay on A4 and on A2 between Poznań and Konin, SkyCash on A4). Heavy vehicles pay concession tariffs at plazas or via supported electronic systems. Note that A4 Katowice–Kraków is not covered by e-TOLL and e-TOLL OBUs or app cannot be used on this section.

* '''A1 motorway:''' Gdansk - Toruń section (255 km)
* '''A2 motorway:''' Świecko - Konin section (255 km)
* '''A4 motorway:''' Katowice - Kraków section (61 km)

'''Free Sections Since July 2023:'''

Poland Motorway Toll Costs: Current Rates

* '''A2:''' Konin - Stryków (previously tolled, now free for cars)
* '''A4:''' Wrocław - Gliwice (previously tolled, now free for cars)

'''Heavy Vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes):'''

Toll rates in Poland depend on road management (state KAS vs. private concessionaire), vehicle category, permissible mass, road class, and Euro emission standard.

* Use '''e-TOLL system''' on extensive network of motorways and expressways
* Satellite-based GNSS tracking technology
* Covers 1,600+ km of roads

Poland Motorway Toll Guide 2026

System: e-TOLL (mandatory GNSS system for vehicles > 3.5 t and buses of any mass; light vehicles ≤ 3.5 t toll-free on state roads)
Coverage: State motorways (A1, A2, A4 outside the concession sections) & expressways (for > 3.5 t); private concession sections (A1, A2, A4 for all vehicles)
Currency: Polish Złoty (PLN)
Technology: GNSS/GPS On-Board Unit (OBU), ELS (External Location System / ZSL), e-TOLL PL mobile app; Concession Videotoll (ANPR) and toll plazas
Operator: Head of the National Revenue Administration (KAS) under the Ministry of Finance; concessionaires GTC (AmberOne), Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A. / II S.A. (AWSA), and Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A.

Do I Need e-TOLL for Poland? 2026 Update

Tolled Motorway Network (2026)

A1 Motorway (Gdańsk – Łódź – Gorzyczki): The northern AmberOne section (Rusocin to Nowa Wieś, 152 km) is operated by GTC under a private concession with 12 toll collection sites (PPO Rusocin, SPO Stanisławie, Swarożyn, Pelplin, Kopytkowo, Warlubie, Nowe Marzy, Grudziądz, Lisewo, Turzno, Lubicz, PPO Nowa Wieś). Single-ride tickets are valid 48 hours; losing a ticket results in maximum category charges. State-managed sections south of Toruń are toll-free for passenger cars and tolled for heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t) via e-TOLL.

A2 Motorway (Świecko – Warsaw – Terespol): The section from Świecko to Konin (255 km) is managed by Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A. / II S.A. with toll plazas. The state section from Konin to Stryków/Łódź is toll-free for passenger cars and tolled for heavy vehicles via e-TOLL. Since 1 February 2026, the A2 section between Kałuszyn and Siedlce Południe, east of Warsaw, is also an e-TOLL section for heavy vehicles.

A4 Motorway (Zgorzelec – Wrocław – Katowice – Kraków – Korczowa): The Katowice–Kraków section (61 km) is operated by Stalexport with toll plazas at Mysłowice and Balice. This section is not covered by e-TOLL and e-TOLL devices/app cannot be used here. All other sections (including Wrocław–Gliwice) are state-managed: toll-free for passenger cars and subject to e-TOLL for heavy vehicles.

Expressways (S-roads): All Polish expressways are 100% toll-free for passenger cars and motorcycles. Heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t) and buses pay distance-based e-TOLL charges on designated expressways.

e-TOLL Network from 1 February 2026: About 645 km of road sections were added from 1 February 2026, bringing the e-TOLL toll road network to about 5,869 km. New sections include the A2 between Kałuszyn and Siedlce Południe, sections of expressways S1, S3, S5, S6, S7, S11, S12, S14, S16, S17, S52 and S61, and sections of national roads DK8, DK12, DK50 and DK91 (class G). See the current map on the e-TOLL toll road network page.

How to Pay Polish Motorway Tolls

Payment methods vary by road management and vehicle classification.

1. Passenger Cars (≤ 3.5 t):

 • State Motorways (A1 south of Toruń, A2 Konin–Stryków, A4 Wrocław–Gliwice): No payment or app required — 100% toll-free.
 • A1 Concession (AmberOne): Cash, credit cards, fuel cards, or automatic ANPR AmberGO (no ticket needed).
 • A2 Concession (Autostrada Wielkopolska): Cash (PLN, EUR, USD; foreign currency notes only, change in PLN), cards (Visa, Visa Electron, V Pay, Mastercard, Maestro, JCB, Diners Club), fuel cards (Routex, DKV, UTA, Aris, Flota, Open Drive, Shell, E100, Multi Service Tolls Card, Eurotrafic/AS 24, Lotos, Eurowag), or Videotoll on the Poznań–Konin section via Autopay, bank apps (Millennium, Erste, Pekao, SGB, VeloBank, ING, Pocztowy) and E100 cards. Videotolling uses a separate price list.
 • A4 Concession (Stalexport): Cash (PLN, EUR, USD; EUR and USD notes only, change in PLN), cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro), fleet and fuel cards (PKN ORLEN Flota and Open Drive, Routex, UTA, Shell, DKV, Lotos Biznes, E100), A4Go transponders, Telepass (check OBU compatibility with Telepass), or Videotoll via Autopay, O!AUTO, SkyCash, IKO, Yanosik, and ORLEN fleet cards.

Invoices: A1 and A2 do not issue separate VAT invoices; the fiscal receipt is the invoice. On A4 the single-use ticket is the invoice.

2. e-TOLL for Heavy Vehicles (> 3.5 t) and Buses (9+ seats):

 • Requires an OBU device, ELS (External Location System / ZSL), or the e-TOLL PL mobile app registered on etoll.gov.pl.
 • Supports prepaid accounts (minimum top-up PLN 20) and postpaid accounts backed by cash deposits, bank/insurance guarantees, or qualifying sureties.
 • Since the 1 February 2026 rate increase, check the guarantee amount on postpaid accounts: deferred payment is blocked when charged tolls reach 99% of the guarantee, and the account then becomes a prepaid account with a PLN 0 balance. Use the Guarantee Amount Calculator.
 • Integrated fleet cards (Orlen Flota, DKV, UTA, AS24, EuroWAG, E100, Autopay) can be used to top up prepaid accounts or settle debit notes.

3. EETS (European Electronic Toll Service) Interoperability:

 • EETS in the KAS e-TOLL domain is officially accredited for two providers: Telepass S.p.A. (since 17 October 2022) and Toll4Europe GmbH (since 1 August 2024). Heavy vehicles using these certified OBUs do not require a separate Polish device on state roads. EETS tolls equal e-TOLL tolls and carry the same non-payment consequences.

To calculate exact toll costs for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and all vehicle types across Polish motorways, use the TollGuru Poland toll calculator:

Enforcement and Penalties

Penalties for non-payment or hardware errors on e-TOLL network roads are strictly enforced by the Chief Road Transport Inspector (GITD), ITD inspectors, and Customs/Fiscal Service officers:

 • Administrative Penalties (PLN 250 to PLN 1,500): Imposed by the Chief Road Transport Inspector (GITD) for failing to pay electronic tolls, entering incorrect vehicle category data resulting in underpayment, unregistered heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t), or inaccurate register data.
 • Fines / Penalty Tickets (PLN 500 to PLN 1,500): Issued by ITD or Customs inspectors during roadside checks for obscured/illegible license plates, malfunctioning ELS/OBU units, missing device reference numbers, or satellite transmission signal interruptions exceeding 15 minutes.
 • Enforcement Rules: No more than one fine/penalty can be imposed for the same violation on a vehicle in a single calendar day (00:00–24:00). Prepay non-payment penalties are waived if geolocation data reaches KAS and the toll is settled within 3 days of journey completion (does not apply to roadside checks).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

 • Attempting to use e-TOLL on A4 Katowice–Kraków: e-TOLL devices and mobile apps do not work on the Stalexport A4 concession section. Use cash, cards, A4Go, or supported Videotoll apps (e.g. Autopay).
 • Confusing fleet cards with EETS OBUs: Cards like DKV, UTA, or AS24 are payment instruments used to settle e-TOLL accounts, not standalone EETS hardware units (only Telepass and Toll4Europe are accredited EETS providers).
 • Using legacy viaTOLL OBUs: viaTOLL was permanently shut down in 2021. Legacy devices are non-functional and cause automatic non-payment infractions.
 • Car drivers attempting state e-TOLL registration: Passenger cars (≤ 3.5 t) do not use e-TOLL or paper e-tickets on state motorways anymore — state sections are 100% toll-free for light vehicles.
 • Declaring incorrect emission class: Declaring a higher Euro emission class on your e-TOLL registration than documented results in underpayment penalties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do passenger cars pay tolls on Polish state motorways?

No. Passenger cars and motorcycles of 3.5 t or less drive 100% toll-free on state-managed motorways (A1 south of Toruń, A2 Konin–Stryków and A4 Wrocław–Gliwice). Tolls apply to passenger cars only on private concession sections (A1 Gdańsk–Toruń, A2 Świecko–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków).

Are expressways (S-roads) tolled in Poland?

Expressways are toll-free for passenger cars and motorcycles. However, heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t) and buses must pay distance-based e-TOLL charges on designated expressway sections.

How large is the e-TOLL network in Poland?

Since 1 February 2026, e-TOLL covers about 5,869 km of national roads, including motorways, expressways and selected class G and GP roads, after the addition of about 645 km.

Do foreign-registered vehicles need e-TOLL?

Foreign-registered heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t) and buses must use e-TOLL (OBU, ELS, or app) or an approved EETS device (Telepass / Toll4Europe) when driving on tolled roads. Foreign passenger cars (≤ 3.5 t) do not need e-TOLL on state roads and simply pay at toll plazas on concession motorways.

What is the administrative penalty for e-TOLL non-payment?

Administrative penalties imposed by the Chief Road Transport Inspector (GITD) range from PLN 250 to PLN 1,500 depending on the nature of the violation. A maximum of one administrative penalty/fine can be issued per vehicle in a single calendar day.

Which EETS providers work in Poland?

Telepass S.p.A. (since October 2022) and Toll4Europe GmbH (since August 2024) are accredited EETS providers operating in the e-TOLL domain managed by KAS.
