Do I Need RiverLink for Kentucky? 2026 Update

A RiverLink transponder is not legally required — Pay-by-Plate billing handles vehicles without transponders — but without one you pay 100% more per crossing. Transponder holders pay $2.68; Pay-by-Plate customers pay $5.36 — double the price. Key Reality: Kentucky operates only 3 toll bridges — all in the Louisville metro area crossing the Ohio River to southern Indiana. Most of Kentucky's highways, bridges, and roads are completely toll-free. The Sherman Minton Bridge (I-264) and Clark Memorial Bridge (US-31) are free alternatives, adding 10–20 minutes to cross-river trips.

2026 Update: The Louisville–Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges joint board selected TransCore as the new Toll Service Provider in January 2026, under a 6-year $146 million contract. Walk-up customer service centers in Louisville, KY and Jeffersonville, IN remain open. RiverLink rates adjusted 2.5% on July 1, 2025 and are valid through June 30, 2026. Annual rate adjustment: RiverLink rates increase annually — by 2.5% or the rate of inflation (CPI), whichever is higher. The April 2025 CPI was 2.3%, so the July 2025 increase was 2.5%. The next rate adjustment will take effect July 1, 2026. Always verify current rates at riverlink.com.

• Frequent User Discount: after 40 crossings per month, additional crossings are credited at 50% — bringing the effective rate to $1.34 per crossing

2. Pay-by-Plate (no transponder):

• Cameras photograph your plate; invoice mailed to the registered vehicle owner

Frequently Asked Questions

Does E-ZPass from another state work at Louisville bridges?

Yes. All E-ZPass transponders — including I-PASS (Illinois), E-ZPass Ohio, E-ZPass Indiana, and all other member state transponders — are accepted at the Louisville bridges at the transponder rate ($2.68). You do not need a separate RiverLink account if you already have E-ZPass from another state.

Are there toll roads anywhere else in Kentucky?
