<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes — e-TOLL is mandatory for all vehicles using tolled sections of Poland's motorways. The legacy viaTOLL system was fully shut down on 30 June 2021 and is no longer accepted anywhere in Poland.</p>

== Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Poland? 2025 Update ==
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> Passenger cars can pay via the e-TOLL PL mobile app (no OBU needed) or at toll plazas on concession sections. Trucks and vehicles over 3.5 t require an OBU device registered to e-TOLL. Driving without a valid e-TOLL registration on a GPS-monitored section results on-the-spot fines starting at PLN 500 (approx. €115).</p>

Poland uses a '''mixed toll system''' with significant changes since 2023. Whether you pay tolls depends on your vehicle weight and route:
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2026 Update:</strong> From 1 January 2026, GDDKiA applied a standard CPI-linked rate adjustment across all state-operated e-TOLL sections. The A4 Katowice–Kraków concession section (Stalexport) updated its tariff effective 1 March 2026. Concession rates on the A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin (Autostrada Wielkopolska) were revised in line with the concession agreement's annual escalation clause.</p>

* '''A2 motorway:''' Świecko - Konin section (255 km)

* '''A4 motorway:''' Katowice - Kraków section (61 km)

'''Free Sections Since July 2023:'''
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Poland uses a distance-based tolling model. Rates differ between GDDKiA-operated (state) sections and privately concession-operated sections. All amounts below are 2026 tariffs in PLN per kilometre unless otherwise noted.</p>
* '''A2:''' Konin - Stryków (previously tolled, now free for cars)

== Penalties & Enforcement ==
+
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Can I drive on Polish motorways without e-TOLL?</h3>
 +
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No — on GDDKiA state sections, there are no physical toll booths. If you drive without registering in e-TOLL (app or OBU), roadside GNSS enforcement sensors and cameras will flag an unregistered vehicle and a fine notice (minimum PLN 500) will be issued. On concession sections (A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków), you can pay cash at the plaza as an alternative.</p>

=== Violation Penalties ===
+
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Are expressways (S-roads) tolled in Poland?</h3>
* '''Standard fines:''' PLN 250-1,500 (€55-340)
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No. All Polish expressways (S1, S3, S5, S7, S8, S14, S17, S19, S61, S69, etc.) are toll-free for all vehicle categories. Only motorways with an A designation carry e-TOLL charges.</p>
* '''Lost ticket:''' Full route fare charged

* '''e-TOLL violations:''' Additional fees and administrative costs

* '''Payment deadline:''' Immediate at toll gates, within terms for e-TOLL

=== Enforcement Methods ===
+
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Do foreign-registered vehicles need e-TOLL?</h3>
* '''Manual checks:''' Toll gate operators
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes. There is no exemption for foreign plates. Cars from any country must register the vehicle plate in the e-TOLL PL app or hold an approved OBU. Foreign truck operators must use an EETS-approved device or obtain a GDDKiA OBU.</p>
* '''Automatic detection:''' Video tolling systems

* '''Satellite monitoring:''' e-TOLL GPS tracking

* '''Mobile enforcement:''' Random roadside checks

== Planning Your Poland Journey ==
+
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">What is the penalty for non-payment?</h3>
 +
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">The base administrative fine is PLN 500 for cars and PLN 1,500 for heavy vehicles per unregistered journey. Repeated violations can result in vehicle immobilisation at a border crossing. Foreign nationals may be required to pay on the spot.</p>

=== Cost Considerations ===
+
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Does e-TOLL work for transit through Poland?</h3>
* '''Transit routes:''' Calculate tolls for A1, A2, A4 sections only
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes. Transit vehicles (e.g., a truck driving from Germany to Ukraine via Poland) must register in e-TOLL or use an approved EETS OBU for any tolled motorway section used during transit. There is no transit exemption or separate transit pass.</p>
* '''Free alternatives:''' National roads and expressways available

* '''Heavy vehicles:''' Budget for extensive e-TOLL network coverage

* '''Seasonal variations:''' Some holiday surcharges may apply

=== Travel Tips ===
+
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Are electric vehicles toll-exempt in Poland?</h3>
* '''Route planning:''' Check which sections actually charge tolls
+
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No, EVs are not exempt, but they receive a 33% discount (PLN 0.20/km instead of PLN 0.30/km) on GDDKiA state sections. The discount does not apply on privately operated concession sections (A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków).</p>
* '''Payment preparation:''' Have PLN cash or cards ready

* '''Mobile apps:''' Download relevant apps before travel

* '''Ticket retention:''' Keep toll tickets until exit

* '''Alternative routes:''' Consider toll-free expressways for cost savings

 +
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes, provided the provider is EETS-certified for Poland. Poland Motorway Toll Guide 2026

System: e-TOLL (electronic, mandatory for all vehicles on tolled motorways since July 2021)
Coverage: A1, A2, A4 motorways (tolled sections); expressways toll-free
Currency: Polish Złoty (PLN)
Technology: GNSS/GPS on-board unit (OBU), mobile app (e-TOLL PL), ANPR cameras
Operator: General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA); concession sections by Autostrada Wielkopolska and Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska

Do I Need e-TOLL for Poland? 2026 Update

Yes — e-TOLL is mandatory for all vehicles using tolled sections of Poland's motorways. The legacy viaTOLL system was fully shut down on 30 June 2021 and is no longer accepted anywhere in Poland.

Key Reality: Passenger cars can pay via the e-TOLL PL mobile app (no OBU needed) or at toll plazas on concession sections. Trucks and vehicles over 3.5 t require an OBU device registered to e-TOLL. Driving without a valid e-TOLL registration on a GPS-monitored section results on-the-spot fines starting at PLN 500 (approx. €115).

2026 Update: From 1 January 2026, GDDKiA applied a standard CPI-linked rate adjustment across all state-operated e-TOLL sections. The A4 Katowice–Kraków concession section (Stalexport) updated its tariff effective 1 March 2026. Concession rates on the A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin (Autostrada Wielkopolska) were revised in line with the concession agreement's annual escalation clause.

Poland Motorway Toll Costs: Current Rates

Poland uses a distance-based tolling model. Rates differ between GDDKiA-operated (state) sections and privately concession-operated sections. All amounts below are 2026 tariffs in PLN per kilometre unless otherwise noted.

e-TOLL Rates by Vehicle Category — State-Operated Sections (2026)

Vehicle Category Description Rate (PLN/km) Euro 6 / EV Rate
Category 1 Motorcycles PLN 0.10 PLN 0.10
Category 2 Passenger cars & vans up to 3.5 t, up to 2 axles PLN 0.30 PLN 0.20 (EV/ZEV)
Category 3 Vehicles 3.5–12 t or with trailer, 2 axles PLN 0.53 PLN 0.43
Category 4 Vehicles over 12 t, 3+ axles (standard trucks) PLN 0.97 PLN 0.79
Category 4+ / 5 HGVs over 12 t, 4+ axles, articulated PLN 1.20 PLN 0.98

Euro 6/EV discounts apply on GDDKiA state sections only. Rates effective January 2026. Source: GDDKiA e-TOLL tariff schedule.

Concession Section Flat/Distance Rates (2026)

Section Route / Operator Cars (Cat. 2) Trucks (Cat. 4) Length
A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin Autostrada Wielkopolska PLN 22.50 (full section) PLN 67.50–90.00 149 km
A4 Katowice–Kraków Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska PLN 18.00 (full section) PLN 54.00–72.00 61 km

Concession sections accept e-TOLL registration, cash, and card at toll plazas. Truck rates vary by axle count and emission class.

Typical Journey Costs (2026)

Route Approx. Distance Car (PLN) Truck 40t (PLN)
Warsaw – Łódź (A2) ~130 km tolled PLN 39 PLN 156
Warsaw – Poznań (A2 full) ~290 km tolled PLN 64 (mix state + concession) PLN 220–260
Katowice – Kraków (A4) 61 km (concession) PLN 18 PLN 54–72
Gdańsk – Łódź (A1) ~290 km tolled PLN 87 PLN 348
Wrocław – German Border (A4) ~40 km tolled PLN 12 PLN 48

Tolled Motorway Network (2026)

A1 (Gdańsk – Łódź – Gorzyczki): The north–south spine of Poland. Fully tolled for all vehicle categories under GDDKiA e-TOLL from Gdańsk to the Czech border at Gorzyczki (via Łódź, Piotrków Trybunalski, Częstochowa, Gliwice).

A2 (Świecko – Warsaw – Terespol): The main east–west corridor. The Nowy Tomyśl–Konin section (149 km) is operated by Autostrada Wielkopolska as a concession; sections Warsaw–Terespol are GDDKiA-operated e-TOLL. The western section Świecko–Nowy Tomyśl is GDDKiA-operated.

A4 (Zgorzelec – Wrocław – Katowice – Kraków – Rzeszów – Korczowa): The southern east–west corridor. The Katowice–Kraków section (61 km) is Stalexport concession; all remaining sections are GDDKiA e-TOLL.

Expressways (S-roads) and national roads: Toll-free for all vehicles. Only the three motorways above carry e-TOLL charges.

How to Pay Polish Motorway Tolls

Poland's e-TOLL system offers several registration and payment paths depending on vehicle type.

1. e-TOLL PL Mobile App (cars — no OBU required):

  • Free app (iOS/Android) uses the phone's GPS to register the journey and charge automatically
  • Register a payment card and vehicle plate before travel — no physical device needed
  • Suitable for passenger cars (Category 2) and motorcycles (Category 1)
  • Available at etoll.gov.pl (official GDDKiA portal)

2. OBU (On-Board Unit) — mandatory for vehicles over 3.5 t:

  • GNSS-based device that tracks position and calculates tolls in real time
  • Available from GDDKiA service points, approved distributors, and fleet telematics providers
  • Pre-pay (prepaid balance) or post-pay (invoice) account options
  • Required for all trucks, buses, and vans over 3.5 t — no exceptions

3. Toll Plaza (Concession Sections Only):

  • A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin and A4 Katowice–Kraków still operate traditional toll plazas
  • Accept cash (PLN), credit/debit cards, and e-TOLL registration (OBU / app)
  • Cars may pay at the booth without prior e-TOLL registration on these sections only

4. External OBU / EETS Providers:

  • Poland is part of the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) — approved pan-European OBU providers (DKV, UTA, AS24, T-Systems and others) are accepted on GDDKiA sections
  • Fleet operators already using a European OBU do not need a separate Polish device

To calculate exact toll costs for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and all vehicle types across Polish motorways, use the TollGuru Poland toll calculator:

Recent Changes (2026)

Rate Adjustments:

  • GDDKiA state-section e-TOLL rates increased ~4% from 1 January 2026 in line with CPI indexation
  • A4 Katowice–Kraków (Stalexport) tariff revised upward from 1 March 2026 per concession agreement
  • A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin (Autostrada Wielkopolska) annual adjustment applied Q1 2026

EV / Zero-Emission Discount Expansion:

  • Battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell passenger vehicles continue to receive a 33% discount on GDDKiA sections (Category 2 reduced from PLN 0.30 to PLN 0.20/km)
  • Euro 6 trucks retain a ~18% discount versus lower Euro class equivalents

Network Expansion:

  • Further A1 sections south of Łódź progressively opened and brought under e-TOLL billing
  • A2 eastern extension toward Belarus border remains under construction; no new tolled sections declared in 2026

EETS Integration:

  • Additional EETS OBU providers certified for Poland in early 2026, expanding options for international carriers
  • GDDKiA completed roadside GNSS enforcement sensor upgrades across A1 and A4 in Q1 2026

Planning Your Journey

For Passenger Cars:

  • Download and register the e-TOLL PL app before entering Poland — registration takes 10–15 minutes and requires a valid payment card and Polish or foreign vehicle plate
  • On concession sections (A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków), cash payment at plaza remains available as a backup
  • Typical daily toll spend for a car crossing Poland west–east: PLN 60–100 (approx. €14–23)

For Trucks and Fleets:

  • Register an OBU or confirm your EETS provider is certified for Poland before departure
  • Pre-load sufficient balance on prepay accounts — top-up is possible online but takes up to 15 minutes to reflect
  • Emission class documentation must match the OBU registration to receive Euro 6 discounts — incorrect class triggers the higher rate automatically

Toll-Free Alternatives:

  • All expressways (S-roads) are toll-free — e.g., S8 Warsaw–Wrocław is a viable toll-free alternative to the A2/A4 for some routes, though slower
  • National roads (DK routes) parallel to motorways are toll-free but significantly slower, particularly for trucks

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using viaTOLL credentials: viaTOLL was shut down 30 June 2021. Any attempt to use old viaTOLL OBUs or accounts will result in an unregistered journey and an immediate fine.
  • Assuming expressways are tolled: S-roads carry no tolls. Only the A1, A2, and A4 motorway designations are subject to e-TOLL charges.
  • Wrong emission class on OBU: The Euro class entered at OBU registration determines your rate. If your vehicle is Euro 6 but registered as Euro 5, you pay the higher rate with no automatic correction.
  • Insufficient prepay balance: If your e-TOLL prepay account runs out mid-journey, the system logs a non-payment event. Top up before border crossing.
  • Rental cars: Confirm whether the rental company has pre-registered the vehicle in e-TOLL. If not, you must register the plate in the app yourself before driving on a motorway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive on Polish motorways without e-TOLL?

No — on GDDKiA state sections, there are no physical toll booths. If you drive without registering in e-TOLL (app or OBU), roadside GNSS enforcement sensors and cameras will flag an unregistered vehicle and a fine notice (minimum PLN 500) will be issued. On concession sections (A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków), you can pay cash at the plaza as an alternative.

Are expressways (S-roads) tolled in Poland?

No. All Polish expressways (S1, S3, S5, S7, S8, S14, S17, S19, S61, S69, etc.) are toll-free for all vehicle categories. Only motorways with an A designation carry e-TOLL charges.

Do foreign-registered vehicles need e-TOLL?

Yes. There is no exemption for foreign plates. Cars from any country must register the vehicle plate in the e-TOLL PL app or hold an approved OBU. Foreign truck operators must use an EETS-approved device or obtain a GDDKiA OBU.

What is the penalty for non-payment?

The base administrative fine is PLN 500 for cars and PLN 1,500 for heavy vehicles per unregistered journey. Repeated violations can result in vehicle immobilisation at a border crossing. Foreign nationals may be required to pay on the spot.

Does e-TOLL work for transit through Poland?

Yes. Transit vehicles (e.g., a truck driving from Germany to Ukraine via Poland) must register in e-TOLL or use an approved EETS OBU for any tolled motorway section used during transit. There is no transit exemption or separate transit pass.

Are electric vehicles toll-exempt in Poland?

No, EVs are not exempt, but they receive a 33% discount (PLN 0.20/km instead of PLN 0.30/km) on GDDKiA state sections. The discount does not apply on privately operated concession sections (A2 Nowy Tomyśl–Konin, A4 Katowice–Kraków).

Can I use a European OBU (e.g., DKV, UTA) instead of a Polish OBU?

Yes, provided the provider is EETS-certified for Poland. Check with your OBU provider before entering Poland. Most major European fleet fuel-card and OBU providers are now certified, but coverage should be confirmed individually as certification status can change.
