Do I Need SiVAPass or VAS+ for Guatemala? 2026 Update

No, neither electronic system is mandatory - cash is accepted everywhere - but both speed up passage significantly. SiVAPass works only on Palin-Escuintla; VAS+ works across all three VAS tramos. These are two completely separate systems operated by two separate companies - a SiVAPass account does not work on VAS roads and vice versa.

Key Reality: Guatemala has only 4-5 operational toll roads/sections. Most of the country's road network remains toll-free. Tolls are concentrated on the Palin-Escuintla corridor (the key route connecting Guatemala City to the Pacific coast ports and beaches) and the Carretera VAS network - which is not a single toll point but three separate, independently-tolled road sections: VAS Carretera al Pacifico, VAS Ciudad de Guatemala, and VAS Carretera a El Salvador.

2026 Update: The new Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal autopista (41.2 km, US$140M) by CONVIA is expected to open in 2026 under a 25-year concession agreement begun July 2024. How to Pay Guatemala Tolls

1. SiVAPass (Electronic Prepaid - Palin-Escuintla only):

• Thales PITZ technology; sensors read pass at 5-8 second intervals; express lane up to 50 km/h - no stopping required

Using the Palin-Escuintla autopista: Q15.25 for a car (approximately USD$2) at each of the 2 toll plazas - total Q30.50 one way. If you instead use the VAS Carretera al Pacifico tramo for the initial stretch out of Guatemala City, that adds Q15 more. The remainder of the journey to Pacific beaches and ports via Route 2 is toll-free.
