If you have a French Liber-t toll tag, then you can pay electronically without stopping at the toll gates. If you don’t have a French toll tag then you can buy a ticket at the entry toll gates by pressing a button and pay toll charges while exiting the autoroute. At some autoroutes in France, you can pay directly while exiting the motorway.
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No, a Liber-t télépéage tag is not mandatory, but it saves time. France operates the most extensive tolled motorway network in Europe, and most péage barriers accept cash, Visa/Mastercard, and chip-and-PIN cards in addition to Liber-t.</p>

A Liber-t tag lets you use the dedicated télépéage lane (marked with an orange "t" logo) and pass without stopping.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2026 Update:</strong> Annual toll increases took effect on 1 February 2026 on most concessions, averaging roughly 0.9% nationally, with differences by operator (for example 0.62% at ATMB). Tolls at the Fréjus and Mont Blanc tunnels rose by 1.19% on 1 January 2026. The French government's direction to limit increases below inflation continues. Télépéage sans arrêt (free-flow tolling without stopping) has been piloted on select sections and is expanding. The entire A13 and A14 Paris-Normandie axis (operated by SAPN, part of the Sanef Group) has completely removed its physical booths in favor of barrier-free overhead tracking gantries. The A79 (operated by ALIAE) is also entirely barrier-free, and further permanent transitions are launching across other networks like APRR and ALIS. Drivers without a Liber-t tag on a barrier-free section must pay through the operator after passing the gantry, so check the operator's payment deadline before travelling.</p>

<h3>French toll tag</h3>
<div style="overflow-x: auto; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch; margin: 20px 0;">
French toll tag (Liber-t) is a device that allows you to pay tolls on motorways in France without needing you to stop and pay at toll gates. When travelling on designated lanes (lanes with Liber-t symbol or the tag-only lane), the tolls will electronically get deducted from the linked account. You can use French toll tag by attaching them to a central-top position of the windscreen in a visible place behind the rear-view mirror.

<h3>Can you pay contactless tolls on French toll roads</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Class 2 vehicles adapted to carry disabled passengers pay the Class 1 rate (request it through the lane intercom; French-registered vehicles need the "Handicap" mention on the registration certificate). On the VINCI Autoroutes network, Class 2 pays about 1.5 times, Class 3 about 2 times and Class 4 about 3 times the Class 1 rate. For example, A8 Aix to Nice costs €21.20 (Class 1), €31.50 (Class 2), €45.00 (Class 3) and €62.60 (Class 4).</p>
Yes, you can pay toll in France contactlessly using French toll tags like Liber-t. You will continue to pay contactless on French toll roads even after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

<li>For a Class 4 truck, Paris (A10 La Folie-Bessin) to Bordeaux (Virsac) costs €187.60 against €60.90 for a car (VINCI Autoroutes, 1 February 2026)</li>
<li>Free alternatives (routes nationales and départementales) exist but add 2–4 hours to most long-distance trips</li>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes. Visa and Mastercard (chip-and-PIN and contactless) work at most French péage stations, although cards issued in some non-European countries may be refused. American Express is generally not accepted. Some older unmanned lanes only accept chip cards, so keep a backup card handy.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Is a Liber-t tag worth it for a holiday trip?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">For a single trip, probably not, as account setup takes time and most providers charge a tag deposit. For repeat visitors or anyone making 4+ toll transactions, the time saving in télépéage lanes justifies setup. Ulys and Sanef tags can be ordered online before departure.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Do campervans pay higher French tolls?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">It depends on height. Standard campervans and motorhomes that are between 2 and 3 metres tall (and under 3.5 tonnes) are designated as Class 2 (Intermediate vehicles). Those 3 metres or taller are Class 3 (2 axles) or Class 4 (3 or more axles); Class 3 pays roughly twice the car rate (for example €45.00 against €21.20 on A8 Aix to Nice). Many modern large motorhomes exceed 3 metres.</p>

France Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: Closed (ticket-based, distance-priced) tolls on most autoroutes; open (barrier, fixed-fee) tolls on some sections, bridges and tunnels; barrier-free free-flow tolling on A13, A14 and A79
Operators: VINCI Autoroutes (ASF, COFIROUTE, Escota, Arcos), Sanef Group (Sanef, SAPN), APRR Group (APRR, AREA), Atlandes, ALIAE (A79), SFTRF (Fréjus Tunnel, A43), ATMB (Mont Blanc Tunnel) and others under DGITM regulation
Currency: Euro (EUR)
Coverage: ~9,000 km of tolled autoroutes; national routes (RN) and départementales are free
Technology: Télépéage (Liber-t transponder), cash lanes, credit/debit card lanes, free-flow tolling (télépéage sans arrêt and barrier-free gantries)

Do I Need a Télépéage Tag for France? 2026 Update

No, a Liber-t télépéage tag is not mandatory, but it saves time. France operates the most extensive tolled motorway network in Europe, and most péage barriers accept cash, Visa/Mastercard, and chip-and-PIN cards in addition to Liber-t.

Key Reality: During summer peak periods (July–August), péage queues can add 20–45 minutes to journeys on major routes (A7 Autoroute du Soleil, A9, A10). A Liber-t tag lets you use the dedicated télépéage lane (marked with an orange "t" logo) and pass without stopping.

2026 Update: Annual toll increases took effect on 1 February 2026 on most concessions, averaging roughly 0.9% nationally, with differences by operator (for example 0.62% at ATMB). Drivers without a Liber-t tag on a barrier-free section must pay through the operator after passing the gantry, so check the operator's payment deadline before travelling.

France Toll Costs: Current Rates

French péage uses a five-class (classe) vehicle system based on total height, authorised gross weight (PTAC) and number of axles. Rates vary by concession company and section. Closed systems charge by distance between the entry and exit toll stations, while open systems charge a fixed fee at a single barrier, tunnel or bridge.

Vehicle Classification

Class Vehicles
Class 1 Light vehicles (height up to 2 m and gross weight up to 3.5 t), including a vehicle towing a trailer within the same limits
Class 2 Intermediate vehicles (height over 2 m and under 3 m, gross weight up to 3.5 t), such as large vans, campervans and a car towing a caravan
Class 3 2-axle HGVs, coaches and other 2-axle vehicles (height of 3 m or more, or gross weight over 3.5 t)
Class 4 HGVs, coaches and other vehicles with 3 or more axles (height of 3 m or more, or gross weight over 3.5 t)
Class 5 Motorcycles, sidecars, quadricycles and trikes

Class 2 vehicles adapted to carry disabled passengers pay the Class 1 rate (request it through the lane intercom; French-registered vehicles need the "Handicap" mention on the registration certificate). On the VINCI Autoroutes network, Class 2 pays about 1.5 times, Class 3 about 2 times and Class 4 about 3 times the Class 1 rate. For example, A8 Aix to Nice costs €21.20 (Class 1), €31.50 (Class 2), €45.00 (Class 3) and €62.60 (Class 4).

Sample Rates: Major Routes (2026)

These are open toll systems, where a single barrier, tunnel or bridge charges a fixed fee regardless of distance travelled. Closed (ticketed) autoroute sections are priced by distance and are not listed here; use the toll calculator below for those. Rates include 20% VAT.

Road name Toll Plaza Class 1 Car (€) Class 4 HGV (€)
A43 Fréjus Tunnel (SFTRF) €55.50 €404.80
T1 Mont Blanc Tunnel €56.40 €411.60
A355 Ittenheim Barrier (Strasbourg western bypass) €2.40 to €5.40 €9.00 to €15.20
A86 Duplex A86 (Rueil, Vaucresson, Vélizy) €1.70 to €14.90 Not published
Prado Sud Tunnel Prado Sud (Marseille) €2.90 Not published

A355 rates vary by time of day and day of week, and the Class 4 range is for Euro 6 or higher; A355 tariffs applicable from 1 February 2026 are provisional pending final state validation. Duplex A86 rates vary by time, day and direction. Fréjus and Mont Blanc tunnel rates are single-crossing fares.

How to Pay France Tolls

1. Liber-t Télépéage Tag:

  • Works on all French autoroutes and many European toll roads (EETS compatible)
  • Available from concession operators (for example Sanef and VINCI's Ulys), DKV and other providers
  • Use the orange "t" lane, no stopping required at most barriers

2. Credit / Debit Card (chip-and-PIN or contactless):

  • Visa, Mastercard and CB accepted at most péage stations; cards issued in some non-European countries may be refused
  • Contactless widely available; American Express not accepted at most booths
  • Insert card and confirm amount, no PIN entry typically required for contactless

3. Cash:

  • Accepted at staffed lanes and at automated machines with coin/note slots
  • Change is given; exact change not required
  • Staffed lanes (with an attendant) are marked with an orange light; unmanned lanes accept card only at many modern barriers

4. Free-flow (barrier-free sections):

  • Applies to the A13, A14 and A79, where gantries read the tag or plate as you drive through
  • Liber-t users are charged automatically
  • Other drivers must pay through the operator after the journey; check the operator's deadline to avoid a fine

Enforcement & Penalties

  • Driving through a barrier without paying (fraude) is an offence: CCTV captures the plate and a €90 fine plus the toll amount is issued by post
  • Unregistered vehicles with Liber-t tag (wrong plate or vehicle) incur a €50 administrative fee per incident
  • A rejected payment or insufficient funds on a Liber-t account triggers a payment request, and the account can be suspended if not resolved
  • On closed systems, a lost or expired entry ticket means the highest fare for that entry point is charged (the VINCI Escota transit ticket is valid for 24 hours)
  • EU Cross-Border Enforcement Directive does not cover tolls, toll evasion, or civil parking fines

Recent Changes (2026)

  • February 2026 tariff increase: Most concessions raised rates on 1 February 2026, by roughly 0.9% on average (for example 0.62% at ATMB), in line with the government-negotiated index linked to inflation and investment commitments. The Fréjus and Mont Blanc tunnels rose by 1.19% on 1 January 2026
  • Free-flow tolling expansion: Télépéage sans arrêt (no-stop free-flow) is being deployed on additional sections; conventional booths are progressively removed on tested corridors
  • Strasbourg western bypass (A355): The Ittenheim barrier and side station use time-of-day pricing; tariffs applicable from 1 February 2026 are provisional pending final state validation
  • EV incentives under discussion: The French government has proposed reduced péage rates for zero-emission vehicles; no binding schedule has been confirmed for 2026
  • Ulys multi-network tag: VINCI's Ulys tag, which covers France and several other European countries, continued its rollout with new partner networks added in 2025

Planning Your Journey

  • Paris to the Côte d'Azur (Nice) by car costs approximately €85–€95 in tolls; for reference, Lyon to Marseille/Aix costs €28.10 and Aix to Nice costs €21.20 for a Class 1 car on the VINCI network (1 February 2026); budget accordingly for a summer driving holiday
  • For a Class 4 truck, Paris (A10 La Folie-Bessin) to Bordeaux (Virsac) costs €187.60 against €60.90 for a car (VINCI Autoroutes, 1 February 2026)
  • Free alternatives (routes nationales and départementales) exist but add 2–4 hours to most long-distance trips
  • Avoid the A7/A9 "Autoroute du Soleil" on the first and last weekends of July and August, as these are officially "black" traffic days; hundreds of kilometres of queues are common
  • A standard passenger car towing a typical caravan or leisure trailer (where the total setup is under 3.5 tonnes and under 3 meters in height) is designated as Class 2 (Intermediate vehicles)
  • Some toll lanes have a height gantry and accept only vehicles up to 2 m; with a roof box or roof load taking the total above 2 m, use a lane without a gantry

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a foreign bank card at French péage?

Yes. Visa and Mastercard (chip-and-PIN and contactless) work at most French péage stations, although cards issued in some non-European countries may be refused. American Express is generally not accepted. Some older unmanned lanes only accept chip cards, so keep a backup card handy.

Is a Liber-t tag worth it for a holiday trip?

For a single trip, probably not, as account setup takes time and most providers charge a tag deposit. For repeat visitors or anyone making 4+ toll transactions, the time saving in télépéage lanes justifies setup. Ulys and Sanef tags can be ordered online before departure.

Do campervans pay higher French tolls?

It depends on height. Many modern large motorhomes exceed 3 metres.

Are there toll-free motorways in France?

Yes. Sections around large cities (the Paris périphérique and the Bordeaux ring road, for example) are typically toll-free. Routes nationales (N roads) and routes départementales (D roads) are always free. Some urban and regional motorways are tolled: the A36 Mulhouse–Beaune section, the A81, Lyon's Périphérique Nord, the Duplex A86 and the Prado tunnels in Marseille.
