Do I Need a Transponder for Canada Tolls? 2026 Update

No single transponder covers all Canadian tolls - Canada has no unified national toll system. Each province uses different payment methods. However, most Canadian toll roads are fully electronic, meaning you will be billed by mail if you do not have the relevant transponder for that facility.

Key Reality: The vast majority of Canadian highways - including the Trans-Canada Highway - are completely toll-free. Tolls are concentrated on specific urban bypasses and a few bridges. Most interprovincial travel involves zero toll charges.

2026 Update: Highway 407 ETR rates increased January 1, 2026, with light vehicle rates now ranging from 50.49¢ to 119.21¢ per kilometre depending on zone, time of day, and direction. Annual transponder lease is now CAD$31.50 plus tax. A new 407 ETR loyalty program launched in 2026, allowing drivers to earn and redeem points. Halifax's Angus L. Macdonald and MacKay Bridge tolls were removed in March 2025 and remain toll-free. E-ZPass is NOT accepted on Canadian toll roads (except select Canada-US border crossings).

How to Pay Canadian Tolls

1. Highway 407 ETR (Ontario):

• Transponder (recommended): Annual lease CAD$31.50 + tax; eliminates camera charges and monthly account fees. Pays for itself after just 3 round trips
• NextPass: Designed for out-of-province and US drivers. No transponder required, no prepayment, billed directly to linked payment method in CAD
• Video Toll (no transponder): Camera reads licence plate; bill mailed to registered owner. Additional camera charge applies per trip
• Heavy vehicles (over 5,000 kg): Transponder is mandatory by law
• Route Relief Program: Up to 8 free trips/month for eligible low-income drivers (increased from 6 in 2025)

2. Confederation Bridge (PEI):

• Toll collected only when leaving PEI (westbound toward New Brunswick) - crossing onto PEI is free
• StraitPass transponder for frequent users; credit/debit cards and cash accepted at toll plaza

3. Quebec Bridges (A25, A30):

• All-electronic tolling - no cash booths on A25; credit cards accepted on A30
• Quebec-registered EVs with valid transponders cross A30 toll-free
• Without transponder: bill mailed to registered owner with additional processing fee

Highway 407 ETR (Ontario):

• New 2026 rate schedule effective January 1, 2026 - central afternoon zones increased up to 34¢/km for light vehicles

Frequently Asked Questions

Does E-ZPass work in Canada?

No. E-ZPass is not accepted on Canadian toll roads. However, some Canada-US border bridges accept E-ZPass: Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, Ambassador Bridge, and Thousand Islands Bridge. US drivers on the 407 ETR should use NextPass or pay by video toll.

Is the Trans-Canada Highway tolled?

Almost entirely toll-free. The only exception is the Cobequid Pass section in Nova Scotia, which charges CAD$4 for out-of-province vehicles; Nova Scotia-registered vehicles cross for free.

What happens if I drive 407 ETR without a transponder?

Cameras photograph your licence plate and a bill is mailed to the registered vehicle owner. An additional video toll charge applies per trip, making it significantly more expensive than using a transponder. Unpaid bills can result in licence plate denial for Ontario-registered vehicles.

Do I pay to enter or exit PEI on the Confederation Bridge?

The toll is collected only when leaving PEI (travelling westbound toward New Brunswick). Entering PEI is free. The round-trip toll of approximately CAD$50.25 is collected on the exit crossing.
