Since 2012, AutoExpreso became the exclusive payment method on most of Puerto Rico's tollways, with limited cash lanes remaining on select highways.</p>

Puerto Rico Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: AutoExpreso electronic toll collection + limited cash lanes
Coverage: 7 major toll highways (PR-5, PR-17, PR-20, PR-22, PR-52, PR-53, PR-66)
Currency: US Dollar (USD)
Technology: RFID transponders, MóvilCash cards, in-lane replenishment
Operator: Puerto Rico Highways and Transportation Authority (PRHTA)

Do I Need AutoExpreso for Puerto Rico? 2025 Update

Yes, you absolutely need AutoExpreso for Puerto Rico toll roads - most major highways are now cashless only. Since 2012, AutoExpreso became the exclusive payment method on most of Puerto Rico's tollways, with limited cash lanes remaining on select highways.

Key Reality: Major highways like PR-52, PR-53, PR-66, and sections of PR-22 are completely cashless ("solo AutoExpreso"). Without an AutoExpreso tag, you'll face hefty fines and rental car penalties.

2025 Update: All electronic toll collection has reduced rush hour wait times by up to 45 minutes. Puerto Rico's 200-mile toll network with 22 toll plazas now processes over 70% of transactions electronically.

Puerto Rico Toll Costs: Current Rates

Puerto Rico toll costs range from $0.35 to $5.00 per toll plaza, with pricing based on vehicle axles and specific highway sections.

Current Toll Rates by Highway (2025)

Highway Route Toll Plazas Typical Cost (1-axle)
PR-22 (José de Diego Expressway) San Juan to Hatillo 6 tolls $0.75-$1.00 each
PR-52 (Luis A. Ferré Highway) Río Piedras to Ponce 7 tolls $0.35-$5.00 each
PR-53 Fajardo to Salinas 5 tolls $0.75-$2.00 each
PR-66 Carolina to Río Grande 3 tolls $0.75-$1.50 each
PR-20 (Rafael Martínez Nadal) PR-1 to PR-2 (north) 1 toll $0.75-$1.00
PR-5 PR-22 to Bayamón 1 toll $0.75-$1.00
PR-17 PR-26 to PR-20 1 toll $0.75-$1.00

Example Journey Costs (2025)

Route With Tolls Without Tolls Toll Cost
San Juan to Ponce 1 hour 30 min 2 hours 45 min $4.50
San Juan to Aguadilla 1 hour 45 min 3 hours $2.60
Aguadilla to San Juan 2 hours 3 hours 40 min $4.20
Arecibo to Carolina 1 hour 15 min 2 hours 30 min $4.60

How to Pay Puerto Rico Tolls

Puerto Rico offers multiple payment methods, but AutoExpreso is essential for most highways:

1. AutoExpreso Electronic System:

  • RFID windshield transponder for automatic toll payment
  • Required for PR-52, PR-53, PR-66, and sections of PR-22, PR-5
  • Discounted rates compared to cash payment
  • Pre-paid account system with minimum balance requirements

2. MóvilCash Card System:

  • Magnetic stripe card corresponding to AutoExpreso tag
  • Can be recharged at 150+ gas stations and retailers
  • Reverse-debit transaction for cash-based users
  • Swipe card, pay cash, account credited instantly

3. In-Lane Replenishment (R+ Lanes):

  • Purchase or refill AutoExpreso accounts without stopping
  • Cash, debit, or credit cards accepted
  • Marked with green "R" at toll plazas
  • Over 60% of tag sales now occur in R+ lanes

4. Limited Cash Lanes:

  • Available only on PR-22 ("C" lanes) and select sections
  • Significantly longer wait times (15-20 minutes during rush hour)
  • Higher rates than AutoExpreso
  • Not available on most major highways

To calculate toll costs for cars, trucks, motorcycles and all vehicle types across Puerto Rico toll roads, use TollGuru Puerto Rico toll calculator

Recent Changes (2025)

Electronic Toll Collection Expansion:

  • All major highways now primarily AutoExpreso-only
  • Electronic transactions increased from 42% to over 70%
  • Rush hour wait times reduced by up to 45 minutes
  • $26 million conversion project nearing completion

Operational Improvements:

  • Reduced operational costs by $2-3 million annually
  • Recovered $10-20 million in toll revenue "leakage"
  • Improved air quality from reduced idling vehicles
  • 54 lanes converted to electronic-only in Phase I

Rental Car Policies:

  • Most rental companies now require AutoExpreso activation
  • Penalties up to $25 plus tolls for using toll roads without tag
  • Daily fees for tag rental vary by company
  • Automatic billing for toll usage when tag is present

Common Mistakes to Avoid

AutoExpreso Lane Confusion:

  • AutoExpreso lanes are ALWAYS on the left ("solo AutoExpreso")
  • Using AutoExpreso lanes without a tag results in hefty fines
  • Don't use R+ lanes if rental car has AutoExpreso tag (double billing risk)
  • Cash lanes ("C") are on the right, where available

Rental Car Pitfalls:

  • Declining AutoExpreso tag with rental and then using cashless toll roads
  • Not maintaining sufficient balance on AutoExpreso account
  • Using MóvilCash with rental car that has AutoExpreso tag
  • Assuming all highways have cash payment options

Route Planning Errors:

  • Underestimating time savings from toll roads (1-2 hours difference)
  • Not accounting for San Juan area congestion
  • Planning routes during rush hour without considering toll delays
  • Relying on cell service for GPS in remote areas

Planning Your Journey

Cost vs. Time Considerations:

  • Toll roads save 1-2 hours on major routes
  • Daily toll costs: $5-15 for typical island travel
  • AutoExpreso provides 10-20% discount over cash rates
  • Rush hour (7-9 AM, 4-6 PM) requires extra time even with tolls

Essential Preparation:

  • Download Google Maps offline for entire island
  • Activate AutoExpreso with rental car or purchase tag
  • Keep minimum $10 balance on AutoExpreso account
  • Plan alternative routes for main highways

AutoExpreso Recharge Locations:

  • All Puma gas stations island-wide
  • Select Total gas stations
  • Green "R" lanes at toll plazas
  • 150+ participating retailers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I avoid Puerto Rico tolls completely?

Yes, but expect significantly longer travel times. For example, San Juan to Ponce increases from 1.5 hours to 2.75 hours. Free routes use older roads (PR-2, PR-3) with traffic lights and lower speed limits.

What happens if I use a toll road without AutoExpreso?

You'll receive hefty fines from the toll authority and additional penalties from rental car companies (often $25+ plus toll costs). Many highways don't have cash alternatives.

Is AutoExpreso compatible with E-ZPass or SunPass?

No, AutoExpreso is not interoperable with other US toll systems. You must use Puerto Rico's specific AutoExpreso system for toll roads on the island.

How much should I keep on my AutoExpreso account?

Keep at least $10-20 on your account. A full island tour using toll roads costs approximately $15-25 in tolls, depending on your route.

Can I pay cash on any toll roads?

Limited cash lanes ("C" lanes) exist on PR-22 and select sections, but most major highways (PR-52, PR-53, PR-66) are AutoExpreso-only. Cash lanes have much longer wait times.

Do trucks pay different toll rates?

Yes, tolls are charged per axle. A two-axle vehicle pays double the single-axle rate. Commercial vehicles and trucks pay higher rates based on their axle count.
