Do I Need a Rapido Badge to Use Senegal's Motorways? 2026 Update

No — the Rapido badge is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended for anyone driving the corridor regularly. Senegal's tolled motorways operate both manual lanes (where you pay at the booth) and dedicated automatic Rapido lanes. Both charge the same published toll rates; the advantage of Rapido is speed and the ability to pass without stopping.

Key Reality: The Autoroute de l'Avenir (A1) is an open toll system — you pay a fixed amount at each toll plaza or slip road (bretelle) you pass through, rather than being charged by distance travelled between an entry and exit point. Your total cost therefore depends on how many toll points your route crosses. Motorcycles are permitted on the A1 and have their own reduced tariff class, unlike many regional motorways.

2026 Update: The Mbour–Thiadiaye section of the A1 opened to traffic on 29 April 2026, extending the tolled network south towards the Sine-Saloum. The remaining Thiadiaye–Fatick–Kaolack section is scheduled to open in September or October 2026 and will run as a closed (distance-based) toll system with three toll stations — a different model from the open system used on the Dakar–AIBD corridor. Recharging a Rapido badge in a manual toll lane has been prohibited since 1 July 2023; top-ups must be done in advance via the app, a mobile money partner, a bank, or a customer service point.

Senegal Toll Costs: Current Rates

The Autoroute de l'Avenir uses an open tolling system with six vehicle categories. Each toll plaza (péage) and each slip road (bretelle) carries its own fixed charge, and rates apply in both directions. A journey crossing several toll points pays the sum of those charges.

Because the A1 is an open system, your total is the sum of every toll point you cross — not a single distance-based charge. Motorcycles are permitted and pay the lowest rates on the network.

How to Pay Senegal Motorway Tolls

Senegal's motorways offer two payment routes, both charging identical published rates:

1. Rapido — Electronic Toll Badge (Fastest)

• Rapido is an adhesive badge (sticker) fixed to your windscreen and linked to a prepaid balance
• The sticker is provided free of charge at customer service points on the Autoroute de l'Avenir — including the Dalifort service area and the Toglou and Thiaroye toll stations
• The sticker is designed to deteriorate if removed, which prevents it being swapped between vehicles in a fleet
• Rapido holders use dedicated automatic lanes — at the Rufisque toll gate the Rapido lane is on the left-hand side; pass through at no more than 30 km/h so the badge reads correctly
• Track your balance in real time through the Sunu Autoroute mobile application

2. Manual Toll Lanes (Cash and Mobile Money)

• Pay the posted rate for your vehicle category at the booth in FCFA cash
• Suitable for visitors, occasional users and rental vehicles without a badge
• Since 1 July 2023 it is no longer possible to recharge a Rapido badge in a manual lane — top up in advance
• Queues at manual lanes are longest during weekday peak hours and around major holidays such as Tabaski and Magal

Topping Up a Rapido Badge

Rapido supports an unusually broad set of top-up channels, reflecting Senegal's mobile money ecosystem. Recharging is free of charge:

Enforcement and Penalties

Barriers at manual lanes remain closed until payment is made, and automatic Rapido lanes are reserved exclusively for badge holders with sufficient credit. Traffic offences on the motorway (speeding, dangerous driving) are enforced by the Gendarmerie, not by the motorway concessionaire.

Recent Changes (2026)

Network Expansion — Mbour–Fatick–Kaolack:

• The Mbour–Thiadiaye section opened to traffic on 29 April 2026, extending the A1 south of Mbour
• The remaining Thiadiaye–Fatick–Kaolack section is scheduled to open in September or October 2026, completing a roughly 100 km strategic corridor into the Sine-Saloum at a reported cost of 484 billion FCFA
• The new corridor is built to 2×2 lanes with provision for widening to 2×3, with interchanges at Thiadiaye, Fatick and Kaolack
• Unlike the open system on the Dakar–AIBD corridor, this extension operates as a closed toll system with three toll stations offering both manual and automatic lanes — meaning distance-based charging between entry and exit

Temporary Holiday Opening:

• For Tabaski 2026, the state opened the Thiadiaye–Kaolack section to traffic ahead of its formal commissioning, accessible daily from 20 May to 7 June 2026 to ease holiday travel

Payment Ecosystem Growth:

• Rapido top-ups now span a wide mobile money and banking network — Wave, Orange Money, Mixx by Yas, Djamo, Wizall Money and Kash Kash alongside seven banking partners — making the badge practical for drivers without a traditional bank account
