Do I Need ExpressToll for Colorado? 2026 Update
ExpressToll is not required — you can pay by license plate billing on all Colorado toll roads. However, ExpressToll customers save up to 40% on E-470 and 35%+ on express lanes compared to License Plate Toll (LPT) rates. No cash is accepted anywhere in Colorado's toll system.
Key Reality: Express lanes require an ExpressToll transponder or a switchable HOV3+ transponder — without one, you pay higher LPT rates. On express lanes, HOV 3+ travelers with a switchable transponder set to HOV mode travel free. Motorcycles are free on C-470 and all CDOT express lanes.
2026 Updates: I-25 Express Lanes between Berthoud and Fort Collins (14 miles in Larimer and Weld counties) opened for tolling on April 7, 2026 — $1.00–$4.75 per segment with ExpressToll. A 30-day warning period for weaving violations runs through May 6, 2026; civil penalties begin May 7, 2026. Automated Express Lane enforcement ($75 civil penalty for crossing solid lines) is now active on all Colorado express lanes. The same ExpressToll pass works on all Colorado toll facilities including the new I-25 North segments.

Facility Descriptions
E-470 (Denver Beltway): 47-mile toll beltway encircling the east and south of Denver. Connects I-70 at the north (Denver International Airport access) through Aurora and to C-470 at the south. Five mainline toll plazas (A–E) plus ramp tolls. The primary DIA access route from the north or south. Distance-based fixed rates — not dynamic.
Northwest Parkway: 10-mile toll highway connecting Broomfield, Westminster and Boulder County. Connects US-36 and E-470 in the northwest Denver metro. Operated by Northwest Parkway LLC under a concession agreement.
US-36 Express Lanes (Denver–Boulder): Connects downtown Denver to Boulder via Westminster and Broomfield. Solo toll-paying drivers can only use the Express Lanes from I-25 east of Pecos — the lanes west of Pecos are HOV-only. Combined with I-25 Express Lane access.
I-70 Mountain Express Lane: Seasonal eastbound-only express lane between Idaho Springs and Empire Junction, open on high-traffic ski weekends and holidays. Rates are among the most dynamic in Colorado — can reach $30 or more during peak ski season. Check CDOT's website before traveling on ski weekends.
Planning Your Journey
Toll-free alternatives:
- I-25 general purpose lanes run parallel to all express lanes — always toll-free but subject to congestion
- E-470 airport alternative: I-270 → I-76 → I-70 to DIA is toll-free but adds 20–40 minutes during peak hours
- HOV 3+ travelers: free on all express lanes with a switchable transponder — the biggest savings available
Practical tips:
- Register rental car license plates to your ExpressToll account before driving — failure to do so results in separate invoices at LPT rates
- Set switchable transponder to HOV mode before entering the lane — you cannot change it once inside
- I-70 Mountain Express Lane: sign up for CDOT email alerts at the start of ski season — the lane opens based on traffic thresholds, not a fixed schedule
- Violation payments: call 1-800-343-2633 (automated) or visit ExpressLaneSafety.com
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ExpressToll work in other states?
Yes. ExpressToll is interoperable via the Central United States Interoperability Hub — it works on toll roads in Texas (TxTag network), Oklahoma, and Kansas. It is not compatible with E-ZPass (eastern states) or FasTrak (California).
Can HOV vehicles use express lanes for free?
Yes — HOV 3+ vehicles with a switchable HOV transponder set to HOV mode travel free on all Colorado Express Lanes, including the new Berthoud–Fort Collins segment. The transponder must be set before entering; you cannot change it once inside the lane.
What is the fine for weaving across solid lines?
$75 civil penalty, mailed to the registered vehicle address. If not paid within 20 days, it rises to $150. Cameras and roadside sensors detect violations automatically. For emergency vehicles only, crossing solid lines to yield is permitted and not penalized.
Are motorcycles free on Colorado toll facilities?
Motorcycles are free on C-470 Express Lanes and all CDOT Express Lanes. A GO-PASS sticker transponder is available for motorcycles. Check E-470 and Northwest Parkway for their specific motorcycle policies as these are operated by separate authorities.
