Coverage: 3 Ohio River bridges in the Louisville metro area only
Currency: US Dollar (USD)

Operator: RiverLink — Kentucky–Indiana joint operation (Louisville–Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Authority)

Do I Need RiverLink for Kentucky? 2026 Update

A RiverLink transponder is not legally required — Pay-by-Plate billing handles vehicles without transponders — but without one you pay 100% more per crossing. Transponder holders pay $2.68; Pay-by-Plate customers pay $5.36 — double the price. For regular commuters crossing 40+ times monthly, the frequent user discount brings the rate down further to $1.34 per crossing.

Key Reality: Kentucky operates only 3 toll bridges — all in the Louisville metro area crossing the Ohio River to southern Indiana. Most of Kentucky's highways, bridges, and roads are completely toll-free. The Sherman Minton Bridge (I-264) and Clark Memorial Bridge (US-31) are free alternatives, adding 10–20 minutes to cross-river trips.

2026 Update: The Louisville–Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges joint board selected TransCore as the new Toll Service Provider in January 2026, under a 6-year $146 million contract. The new cloud-based Integrity Back Office System dramatically improves billing accuracy and customer service compared to the previous provider, which faced persistent backlogs. Walk-up customer service centers in Louisville, KY and Jeffersonville, IN remain open. RiverLink rates adjusted 2.5% on July 1, 2025 and are valid through June 30, 2026. Starting May 2026, overdue tolls and fees may be referred to collections — accounts should be kept current.

Kentucky / Louisville Bridge Toll Costs (2026)

RiverLink Rates by Vehicle Class (Effective July 1, 2025 — Valid Through June 30, 2026)

Vehicle Class Transponder Rate / Crossing Pay-by-Plate Rate / Crossing Notes
2-axle passenger vehicles (cars, motorcycles) $2.68 $5.36 Frequent user: $1.34 after 40 crossings/month
2-axle commercial vehicles Higher than passenger rate Approx. double transponder rate Commercial rates vary by axle count
5+ axle trucks Up to $16.01 Higher Scales by axle count per rate schedule

Annual rate adjustment: RiverLink rates increase annually — by 2.5% or the rate of inflation (CPI), whichever is higher. The April 2025 CPI was 2.3%, so the July 2025 increase was 2.5%. The next rate adjustment will take effect July 1, 2026. Always verify current rates at riverlink.com.

The Three RiverLink Bridges

Bridge Route Connection Direction Tolled
Abraham Lincoln Bridge I-65 Downtown Louisville ↔ Jeffersonville, IN (northbound) Northbound (KY to IN)
John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge I-65 Downtown Louisville ↔ Jeffersonville, IN (southbound) Southbound (IN to KY)

Free Alternatives: Sherman Minton Bridge (I-264) and Clark Memorial Bridge (US-31) are toll-free crossings — both add approximately 10–20 minutes to most cross-river trips.

How to Pay Kentucky / RiverLink Tolls

All three bridges are fully electronic — no cash is accepted.

1. RiverLink Transponder (Recommended — 50% savings):

  • Local Transponder: Free (one per registered vehicle); works only on the three Louisville RiverLink bridges
  • E-ZPass Transponder: $15 one-time cost; works on Louisville bridges plus all 20 E-ZPass network states
  • Open a RiverLink account at riverlink.com, at a Customer Service Center, or by calling 1-855-RIV-LINK
  • Minimum $20 deposit to open; auto-replenishment available via linked credit/debit card
  • All E-ZPass transponders from other states (including I-PASS from Illinois, E-ZPass from Ohio, etc.) are accepted at the Louisville bridges at the transponder rate
  • Frequent User Discount: after 40 crossings per month, additional crossings are credited at 50% — bringing the effective rate to $1.34 per crossing

2. Pay-by-Plate (no transponder):

  • Cameras photograph your plate; invoice mailed to the registered vehicle owner
  • Pay-by-Plate rate ($5.36) is exactly double the transponder rate — significant savings by setting up an account
  • Unpaid bills escalate to collections starting May 2026 — all overdue balances should be settled promptly

Tips for visitors and rental car users:

  • RiverLink starter kits available at select retail locations for short-term use
  • Even if your transponder hasn't arrived yet, opening an account online saves you money retroactively — past tolls are adjusted to transponder rates upon account activation
  • Rental companies: check their specific toll policies — admin fees vary ($5–15/day)
  • Fee Forgiveness Program: one-time waiver of all accumulated late fees per license plate — contact RiverLink to apply (open to drivers who set up a new account)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does E-ZPass from another state work at Louisville bridges?

Yes. All E-ZPass transponders — including I-PASS (Illinois), E-ZPass Ohio, E-ZPass Indiana, and all other member state transponders — are accepted at the Louisville bridges at the transponder rate ($2.68). You do not need a separate RiverLink account if you already have E-ZPass from another state.

Are there toll roads anywhere else in Kentucky?

No. Kentucky's only toll facilities are the three Louisville Ohio River bridges operated by RiverLink. All other Kentucky highways, bridges, and roads — including I-64, I-65, I-71, I-75, and the Mountain Parkway — are completely toll-free.

How does the frequent user discount work?

For personal RiverLink accounts in good standing, after your first 40 crossings in a calendar month ($2.68 × 40 = $107.20), each additional crossing is credited at 50% — so crossing 41 and beyond effectively cost $1.34. This applies to personal accounts only; business accounts do not qualify but receive commercial vehicle medium rates on many vehicle types.
